John Jarvis, a son of John and Hannah (Hill) Jarvis, was born in Belair, Baltimore county, MD about 1750, although legend says he was born on the high seas on the voyage from England to America. John died in Lewis County VA (WV) March 13, 1826. His grave marker in Lewis County WV reads "1757-1823 Continental Line Revolutionary War"

John served the Colonies in the American Revolution and was granted a land warrant in Harrison County, VA (WV) for his service. He made application for pension as a Revolutionary veteran in both Harrison and Lewis counties in VA, stating that he had enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in Baltimore County, MD, and was assigned to naval duty in a rowing galley commanded by Captain Bennett Matthews. This galley made trips to Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and three trips to Little York. John then secured a substitute and later reenlisted on a French galley commanded by Captain Davies and later made another trip with Captain Matthews.

In part, John's March 18, 1818 pension application in Lewis County VA (WV) stated that he was then 68 years old, owned one little old house of little value and very doubtful title. He owned about twenty acres of land, very poor soil and very doubtful title.

John and his brother Solomon served together in the Revolution and came to Harrison County together in the late 1700's. Solomon moved to Kentucky before 1820.

John married Sarah Ann Richards in Ann Arundel County MD December 23, 1779. Sarah was born in Hartford County MD about 1760 and died there before 1793. John married Sarah Hood O'Brien in Hartford County about 1798. Sarah was born in Hartford County about 1770 and was apparently a widow. She died in Lewis County after the 1830 census.

J.D. Warfield's "Founders of Ann Arundel Co. MD", speaks of Sarah (Hood) [O'Brien] Jarvis and states, "There is no accounting for what happened between Sarah and John Jarvis. It would seem that she chose to remain in MD at the estate property of her ancestors, while he chose to go west." Warfield must not have been aware of the death date of Sarah Ann (Richards) Jarvis.

John was listed in the 1783 Hartford County census as a head of a household of six white souls and one slave.

State of Maryland City of Baltimore

Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that on the August 21st, 1842 before the Orphans Court for Baltimore County, the same being a Court of Record, personally appeared Ann Jarvis aged 83 years a resident of said city and former resident of Anne Arendel and Baltimore counties and State of Maryland, who, being duly sworn according to law did on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed July 4th 1836.

That she is the widow of John Jarvis, who enlisted as a private soldier in the Company of Captain Bird, in the First Maryland Regiment under command of Colonel Otho Williams and that her husband served until the end of the Revolutionary War and received pay for his service from John Hamilton, agent for the Maryland Line, that she the said Ann Jarvis formerly, Ann Richards and her husband John Jarvis were lawfully married in the month of December in the year 1779 by the Rev. Walter Magowan in St. James Parish Anne Arundel County and State aforesaid and that after their marriage the said Ann and John Jarvis were the mother and father of five children, namely Sophia, Eliza, Rosillan, John and Mary Ann Jarvis, "all of whom are married and have children" and this Deponent further declares that her aforesaid husband John Jarvis died on the 13th day of March 1826 since which period the said Deponent has remained unmarried.

Almost all Jarvis researchers show his parents as John Jarvis, some with Anne Richards, some with Sarah Hood.

In trying to research John Jarvis I came to realize is that the pedigree for John Jarvis 1750-1826 is hopelessly messed up. Public and private member stories on Ancestry.Com are only partly true. John Jarvis clearly did not have 16 children by two wives. The article: "John Jarvis and his two Sarah´s" seems to be a myth. There is no researcher that I know of giving any credible citations and most cite: Ancestry.Com World Tree (a mix of truth and gossip) Intl. records for birth, mg. & death. (not even a good lead)

There are many John Jarvis´s. Personally, I think John never left Anne Arundel Co. MD. The census info below are only leads to help me find the truth.

Census, 1800 Annapolis, Anne Arundel, MD pg. 6/9 John Jarvis 1m <10, 1m >45 1fm 10-15, 1fm 16-25, 1fm 26-44 (1 son and 2 dau)

Census, 1810 Annapolis Co. Maryland, Anne Arundel pg. 4/5 John Jarvis 1m<10, 1m >45 1fm <10, 2fm 10-15, 1fm >45 1 slave No other Jarvis in county. Wife Ann would be abt. 52 if correct fam.

Now, if you insist he is in Virginia in 1820: Census, 1820 Harrison Co. VA pg. 5/30 (Aug. 7, 1820) John Jarvis 5m <10, 1m 10-16, 1m 16-18, 1m >45 2fm17-26, 1fm >45 This would clearly be an elder John. 7 sons and 2 dau) This can not possibly be the same John as the one in 1810 MD. The 5 sons under 10 are not possible at their ages, plus Ann Richards had only 5 total children.

Many Jarvis researchers do cite his wife´s pension file ect. but even then they seem not to have read it. No one seems to have the correct death date for Ann, even though it is online and easily available.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform all Jarvis Researchers about the two Rev. War files for John and Ann Richards Jarvis:

John Jarvis died 13th March 1826.(no place mentioned) Ann Jarvis was 83 in 1842 and resided in Baltimore, MD (Anne Arendel & Baltimore counties) Ann testified that John enlisted as private in Capt. Bird Co. 1st. MD Regiment under command of Col. Otho A. Williams and served until wars end. He received pay for his service from John Hamilton, agent for the Maryland Line. Ann´s surname was Ann Richards (Not Anne, and no mention of Sarah) John Jarvis married Ann Richard Dec. 1879 by Rev. Walter Magowan in James Parish Anne Arundel Co. Ann and John were parents of 5 children: Sophia, Eliza, Rosilla, John and Mary (no mention of Thomas) Ann has remained unmarried after John Jarvis died. (My note: (This strongly implies that he had no second marriage and that they were married when he died, prob. in Maryland. My personal feeling is that since she was testifying from Baltimore, Maryland, if he had died in VA, she would have so said) The pay rolls of the Rev. kept by John Hamilton, Agent for the Maryland Line were found in the Land Office at Annapolis in 1842, confirming that John Jarrvis, a private, received $80 pay from the 1st. Jan 1782 to th 1st, Jan. 1783. No further record or muster roll found as to time he entered service. Ann Jarvis, #5653 was admitted to pension roll Vol. A, pg. 371

Citation: Md. Rev. War Pension Record, wife of John Jarvis (Ann) #W9331. Maryland #3784 giving testimony in 1842 as to why she should have pension. This was after the Rev. Claim Act 4 July 1836.

Ann Richards Jarvis seems to be John´s only wife. She died not before 1800, nor early in 1800, nor was she abandoned. As she claimed his pension, she was the wife of record. Ann Jarvis died 10 June, 1852 in Anne Arundel Co. MD

Citation: Index to Selected Final Payment Vouchers, 1818-1864 Veteran given name: Jarvis, John Jarvis, Ann (John) date of act: 1836 date of payment: 4th qtr. 1852 date of death 10 June 1852 Final payment voucher received from the General Accounting office NARA, #2733385 Identifier 544/ Record group nr. 217 Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, 1775 - 1978

These records are clearly available on Fold3 as is the Rev. War Pension file for Samuel, in which he says his mother is Hannah and 99 years old in 1829.

Now, I would really appreciate it if anyone with a real source as to Thomas Jarvis parents would be kind enough to share. It is entirely possible that Thomas came from John´s line but his parents would have been in VA from 1800 for him to have been born there in 1804. Could Thomas have been a son of John Jarvis Jr?

I have been working on decomposing the genealogical hybrid John Jarvis for some time now. Most of the work online, and also the comprehensive work by Don Norman, have incorrectly combined 2 John Jarvis into one. As you have outlined, the John Jarvis who md. Ann Richards [no mention of her being named Sarah] md. in Maryland and apparently remained in Maryland throughout his life. They had five children, and only five children, and she survived him. He did have Rev. War service qualifying her for a widow's pension.

The John Jarvis who reportedly md. Sarah Hood O'Brien was a different person, poss. dates 1757-1823 as noted on his modern day grave marker. His widow Sarah is likely the Sarah Jervice in the 1830 census of Lewis Co., VA. He was apparently the brother of Solomon Jarvis who went to KY. They both reported unusual military service on naval galleys under a Capt./Commodore Mathews, also both mentioning a John Monhon/Monahan.

Please refer to Conley Cottrell Family Tree in ancestry.com and story "Military Service..." under either John Jarvis for further details. Hannah Jarvis, mother of Solomon, attested to his War Service in Fleming Co. KY in 1829. She was living in Fleming Co. and was said to be in her 99th year at the time. She is identified as Solomon's mother in his Rejected Pension File.

Solomon attests that he enlisted in Capt. Mathews' unit in Belair, MD. So, it seems that Hannah [poss Hill] Jarvis and John Jarvis who were in BelAir MD abt. 1779 are the parents of Solomon Jarvis who went to KY, and John Jarvis who went to Harrison and Lewis Counties, VA.

Haven't tried proving this yet beyond identifying Solomon's mother as Hannah Jarvis. Neither the John Jarvis who reportedly md. Sarah Hood O'Brien; nor his brother Solomon who went to KY; received anything - land, pension, anything - for their service during the Rev. War period.

The reason is outlined in Solomon's rejected pension file - his service in the naval galleys under Capt. Mathews was not service to the Continental Line. The service that he attested to would have been in the Virginia Navy; and as such, even if proven, would not qualify him for any federal benefits. So, the modern day grave marker for John Jarvis in Westin, Lewis Co., WV is in error, as it credits him with service to the Continental Line.

I assume the Thomas you are trying to trace is the Thomas Figgens Jarvis, attributed to John Jarvis and Sarah Hood O'Brien Jarvis. He reportedly md. Ailsa Bentley Conley? It does seem most likely that he belongs to this couple, but I've not found any proof. Hope this helps a bit. If you have any documentation to add, I'd be delighted to see it.
