Orbituary

John Joseph DOOLEY
January 24, 1915 - January 8, 2006
John Dooley passed away peacefully January 8, 2006 at Remington Place Retirement Inn, where he and his wife of 64 ½ years, Miriam, lived for the past year. John was born to Irish immigrants Mathew and Mame Dooley January 24, 1915 in Everett, Washington. They moved to Ballard in 1917 where the family of nine lived a happy life. As a young boy, John was first a caddy and then assistant golf pro at Olympic Golf Course. Later, he was golf pro at Port Angeles Golf and Country Club. He and Miriam were married in June, 1941. John built the house they lived in for 55 years in Ballard. In 1942, John joined the Seattle Fire Department, working at Station 19 on the waterfront, then at Station 18 in Ballard until his retirement in 1968. Following his retirement, John returned to teaching golf. John and Miriam spent winters playing golf in San Diego and summers at the cabin John built on Lake Goodwin. John will be remembered as a kind, gentle man who was always optimistic and had a wonderful sense of humor. It was a joy and a privilege to have had him in our lives for so long. John was deeply loved by his wife, Miriam, his daughters Colleen (Craig) Pedlar and Joanne (Mike) Scallon and their grandchildren, Todd (Heather) and Joel Pedlar and Jim (Fawn) and Michelle Scallon. He had three great-granddaughters, Abigail, Sarah Grace, and Rebekah Pedlar and one great-grandson, John Michael (Jack) Scallon. He is also survived by his brothers, Ted and Tom Dooley, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marjorie Schmidt and Helen Hird, and brothers, Jim and Fr. Jerry Dooley. The family would like to thank the Seattle Fire Department, Providence Hospice of Seattle and Remington Place Retirement Inn. Memorials are suggested to Medic 1, 325 9th Ave., Seattle, WA 98104, Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N., #300, Seattle, WA 98109, or a charity of your choice. Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 16, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 121 N. 80th St., in Seattle. Interment will be at Holyrood Cemetery.
