Miriam E. Dooley
(July 21, 1918 - September 4, 2013)
Miriam E. Dooley
Miriam Elizabeth (Maki) DOOLEY
Passed away peacefully September 4, 2013 at Ballard Landmark Retirement Community. Her family was by her side. She celebrated her 95th birthday in July at a family party. Miriam was born July 21, 1918 to Finnish Immigrants Eli and Ida Maki in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle. She graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1936. Miriam married John Dooley, an Irishman from Ballard, in 1941. They were married for over 64 years until his death in 2006. She worked for Seattle Public Schools for 23 years, first in the lunchroom at James Monroe Junior High School, and later at the District Administration Center.
Miriam was a devoted wife and mother. She and John raised their daughters, Colleen and Joanne, in Ballard. Following his retirement from the Seattle Fire Department, John, a P.G.A. Professional, taught Miriam to play golf. She was proud of her three holes-in-one. They spent their summers at the family cabin they built and loved on Lake Goodwin. Miriam was an avid swimmer. Winters were enjoyed in San Diego golfing with friends from around the United States and Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John. She is survived by her loving family, daughters Joanne (Mike) Scallon of Seattle, WA and Colleen (Craig) Pedlar of Oak Harbor, WA. Grandchildren are Jim (Fawn) Scallon of Eden Prairie, MN; Michelle Scallon of Woodinville, WA; Todd (Heather) Pedlar of Decorah, IA; and Joel (Trudy) Pedlar of Lynden, WA. Great-Grandchildren are Jack and Juliet Scallon and Abigail, Sarah, Rebekah and Naomi Pedlar. She will also be missed by many dear nieces, nephews and friends.
A private family graveside service is being held. A public Celebration of Life for friends and family will take place in the late Fall. Memorials are suggested to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N., Ste. 300, Seattle, WA 98109.
