John Prince King

John Prince King was the son of Joshua William "Josh" King (1837-1894) and Rachel Clarinda Meadors (1839-1912). Both parents were born in Whitley Co., KY, where they lived and died.

John Prince King was born in 1876 in the Marsh Creek area of Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.). His parents were Joshua William "Josh" King (1837-1894) and Rachel Calrinda Meadors (1839-1912). Both spent their entire lives in an area of Whitley Co. that became part of McCreary Co. in 1912.

His father Joshua was the first born son of Thomas William King (1815-1877) and Jane Stephens (1817-1887). John's paternal grandparents were Thomas Murray King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca Cox (1800-1881). His maternal grandparents were Joshua "Josh" Stephens (1785-1855) and Temperance "Tempy" Dupree (1790-1860).

John's mother Rachel was the daughter of Pleasant Winkler Meadors (1806-1865) and Locicea "Dicey" McKee (1808-abt 1870). Rachel's paternal grandparents were Thomas Meadors (1771-1819) and Elizabeth Martin (1779-1861). Her maternal grandparents were Mathew McKee (1785-1836) and Polly Clark (1772-1859).

John was an intelligent man who loved to read. Throughout his life he acquired a number of books which he liked to share with other people.

John's first marriage (about 1896) was to Rebecca Jane Strunk (1864-1898). She was the daughter of William Morrison Strunk (1824- ?) and Leah Swain (1825- ?). John and Rebecca had one child (Maude) before Rebecca's death in 1898. She was only 34.

After Rebecca's death John married Mary Etta Daugherty (1883-1965) on July 22, 1900. She was born in Whitley Co., KY, the daughter of Hiram Clay Daugherty (1838-1908) and Eliza Jane Bridges (1848-1920).

John and Mary Etta were married for 58 years and had seven known children. In order of their birth they were Everett, Willie, Virgil, Haywood, Herbert, Mitchell and Willard.

John died in 1958, Mary Etta in 1965. Both died in McCreary Co, KY. where they are buried in the Duncan Cemetery.

Obituary: KING, JOHN PRINCE – born March 15, 1876 in Whitley County, Ky., age 82 years, 7 months and 20 days, departed this life November 4, 1958. He was the son of JOSHUA and LINDA KING. He is survived by his wife, MARY ETTA KING; one daughter, Mrs. MAUD ROSS, Strunk, Ky. and 6 sons, EVERETT and HAYWOOD of Pontiac, Michigan, VERGIL, MITCHEL and WILLARD of Strunk, HERBERT of Cincinnati, Ohio, 30 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.
