About John / Jan Klompien

He was born in September 1906 as Jan Klompien (= Small wooden shoe) in the tiny country village Winneweer, just northeast of the village of Ten Post, municipality Ten Boer, in the northeastern central part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of the skippers couple Krijn Klompien and Jaike Rijskamp, who domiciled with their ship in or nearby Loppersum, also in the northeastern part of province Groningen, Nederland (The Netherlands).

In May 1921 his step brother Pieter (28 y) and his brothers Geert 24 y) and Jacob (20 y) Klompien, all three farmers, emigrated to Manhattan, Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana, USA.

On 13 March 1927 Jan Klompien arrived at the age of 20 years on the SS Volendam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. His last residence place in the Netherlands was the country village of Ten Post in the northeastern part of province Groningen, Nederland.

Before 1928 his brother Jacob returned to the Netherlands, but Jan and his brothers Pieter and Geert Klompien stayed in Montana, USA.

In 1930 the 23 years aged John Klompien worked and lived as a hired man with the family Moss in Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.

In February 1932 John Klompien moved from Montana to the former Dutch truck farmers settlement of South Holland, a village located just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On 21 January 1933 John Klompien married in South Holland, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, to the six years younger Johanna de Jong, born in Germany, daughter of Gerrit De Jong and Popkje Hoekstra, and who all arrived on 20 March 1913 on the SS Potsdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island.

The family Klompien resided in April 1935 in the city of Harvey, located just west of South Holland, Cook County, Illinois.

On 10 December 1933 they had in Harvey daughter Joan, and on 24 February 1936 daughter Pauline in the village of Homewood, located about 22 miles south of downtown Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On 13 March 1938 the 31 years aged farmer John Klompien, residing at 171th and Halsted Street, Homewood, filled in -again, in April 1928 for the first time- a Declaration of Intention to become an American citizen. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes, blond hair and a scar on his forehead, was 5 feet 11 inches tall and 165 pounds of weight. The Petition for Naturalization was granted on 28 January 1941 by a court in Chicago.

In April 1940 John Klompien (33 y, born in the Netherlands, farmer), his wife Johanna (27, Germany) and their daughters Joan (6, Illinois) and Pauline (4, Illinois) were living at a rented farm at 1200 171th Street and Halsted Street in Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois. Thornton Township is located immediately south of the city of Chicago, in 2000 its population was 180,802 and the village of South Holland serves as its governmental seat. In September 1940 they were still residing at 171th Street and Halsted Street, Homewood.

John and Johanna Klompien had later on two more children, the sons Carl and Gerald.

John's wife Johanna died on 20 December 1998 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois at the age of almost 86 years. John died there too, in March 2002 at the age of 95 years.
