to Sergeant John Sterling Lawton, United States Army, for coolness and steadiness under fire on 29 September 1879, while serving with Company D, 5th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Milk River, Colorado. Sergeant Lawton volunteered to accompany a small detachment on a very dangerous mission.
