Was appointed police Magistrate of Alberton on 1st January 1854. transferred to sale as police Magistrate on 7th June 1858. He laid the foundation stone of Gippsland Hospital, was held in high regard as to his character and was foremost in all public measures. He bought the instruments for sales for the first Drum and Fife band. In November 1858 he was voted an officer on the committee of the literacy society

" The Sale Mechanics Institute". He was on the Church of England committee, which rebuilt and extended the church. For some reason not known now, he separated from his wife and took Mary Conventry as his new partner ( the legal status of the marriage is not known ). They travelled to New Zealand in 1868. They had 10 children. When in New Zealand he served in the Militia, he lived in Wellington and Oamaru for several years before moving to Blenheim and retiring there. In 1870 he was living in Wellington on the old Johnsonville Road in Kaiwharrawharra ( part of section 5, House and 40 acres of land, Leasehold ). A later residency in Wellington was in Boston Terrace, Te Aro ( circa 1881 ). He spent two to three years in Oamaru when he was appointed Assistant Clerk of the Residents Magistrates Court on 26th June 1877. Around 1883 - 4 he moved to Blenheim where he again held the position of assistant Clerk. He retired in Blenheim and died there. The cause of death was recorded as dilation of the heart, which had bothering him for 5 years and Syncope which lasted 8 hours. John Le Marchant died on the 14th November 1891 and was buried on the 18th November at the Taylor Cemetery Blenheim.

Old stories say that when he came to New Zealand he brought with him a young boy named "Warren" but that the boy did not stay in New Zealand long and went back to Guernsey. His first wife Charlotte Vigurs followed him to New Zealand when he emigrated here. It is said he never married Mary Conventry, although one source tells us that he married her in Melbourne in April 1866. Charlotte was looked after by her son Richard. Harriot and Richard were known to their stepbrothers and sisters and were in contact with them. Richard attended John Le Marchant's funeral in 1891.
