Notes for Octavius Carey C.B., K.C.H.

He was gazetted Ensign in the 11th Foot; Lieutenant the same year; transferred to 3rd Dragoons, now Hussars, Jun 1801; Captain, 11th Foot; 1804; Major 1809; Brevet Lieut.-Colonel 1811; Major 52nd Foot 1815; in 62nd Foot 1816; in 57th Foot 1818.

1818-24: On the withdrawal of the army of Occupation from France in November 1818, the 57th was sent to Ireland, where they spent six years. Their stations were for the most part in the west, at Galway, Limerick and Kinsale, and their duties in suppressing Whiteboy outrages were not the best training for a good regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel Spring retired in 1819, and was succeeded by Octavius Carey, who had joined the 57th from the 62nd in 1818.

Lieut.-Colonel commanding 1819; Colonel 1825; Major-General 1837.

He was made C.B. in 1815; knighted 1830; K.C.B. 1837; Knight-Commander of the Hanoverian Order 1835. He was command of the Cork District at the time of his death.

Octavius built himself a house at the Castel, Guernsey, where his family resided after his death. His branch is thus known as familiarly as 'the Cottage' , from the name of the house.

A Mural Tablet to his memory is on the South Wall of the South Aisle of the Town Church, Guernsey - "IN MEMORY OF MAJOR GENERAL SIR OCTAVIUS CAREY C.B. K.C.B. EIGHTH SON OF THE LATE JOHN CAREY ESQ, A MUCH RESPECTED JURAT OF THE ROYAL COURT OF THIS ISLAND, HE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION DURING THE LATE WAR ON THE EASTERN COAST OF SPAIN AND CLOSED AN HONOURABLE CAREER

OF 34 YEARS SERVICE WHILE IN COMMAND OF THE CORK DISTRICTON THE 13TH OF MARCH 1841. AGED 54

HIS REMAINS ARE DEPOSITED IN THE SAME VAULT WITH

THOSE OF HIS MOTHER IN THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT

MARY 'S CHURCH IN THE CITY OF LONDON.
