About Eòin (John) Mackay, 1st of Skerray
Ha. John Mackay of Skerray, son of Hugh Mackay I. of Strathy, was captured at Balveny in 1649, appointed a commissioner of supply for the shire of Sutherland in 1685 and again in 1690 (Records of Pari.). He obtained in wadset the town and lands of Skerray-Horisdale, port and strath thereof, 28th November, 1659, and m. Margaret, dau. of Hector Munro of Eriboll. He was alive in 1709, and had four known children :—
- i. John, d. without issue before 1679.
- ii. Hector, of whom follows.
- iii. Donald, a notary public in Skerray, Strathan-Tongue...
- iv. Hugh of Cairnloch, of whom afterwards as Illb.

John Mackay of Skerray, the second son, had sasine in the town and lands of Skerray and others, dated 18th May 1675."
He married Margaret, daughter of Hector Munro of Eriboll : issue four sons and three daughters : His sons were,
- 1st, Hector, who succeeded him in Skerray ;
- 2nd, Donald, who studied the law, and was a writer in 1686, and who married Marion, daughter of Donald Munro of Arnaboll : issue Hugh and John ;
- 3d Hugh of Cairnloch who was twice married: lst, to Christian,
- third daughter of Robert Mackay of Achness, (as mentioned in the clan-Abrach branch) : and, 2nd, to his cousin-german, Margaret, youngest danghter of Patrick Sinclair of Ulbster.4th son of John of Skerray, married and had issue.
