About John L Mahan

Obituary:

John L. Mahan
December 22, 1930 — November 3, 2023

John Mahan was welcomed into heaven on Nov 3, 2023. He passed peacefully with his family at his side.

John was born to Oma and Hugh Mahan on 12/22/30, in Hudson, Il. He was the fourth of six children.

He was a man of very humble beginnings and often recalled studying by kerosene lamp.

When he was 18, he was drafted into the Navy. He served during the Korean War and spent the majority of his service in Guam. He had positive memories of this time.

He met his future wife, Dorothy Govednik, at a popular dance hall in Joliet, The Snakepit. He continued to recall every detail of this fateful evening, always feeling very blessed to have met his true love.

With the support of Dorothy, he started college at IIT and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. He was always at the top of his class, a math "genius", as we liked to call him.

He went on to work for Commonwealth Edison in the marketing department for over 30 years. He was well suited for this position as his customers loved him.

John was very much a family man. He never missed lunch with Dorothy, dinner with the family and church every Sunday. He had friends and enjoyed outings but for the most part felt his time belonged to his family.

John was always positive, as he always saw the good in everyone and everything. John's sense of humor was unmatched and he could also be irreverent at times. His memory for details and storytelling abilities were astounding.

Most importantly, John was kind and he was generous. He was the epitome of humble and unassuming. Everyone who met him loved him and he will be missed immensely.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy (Govednik) who was welcomed into heaven on July 8, 2021. His loving sister-in-law, Jean "Teta" Govednik; three sisters: Lillian (Stan)Rohlfing, Barbara (Dan)Konno, Mary Broaddus and two brothers: Jim (Jeanne) Mahan and Max (Joyce) Mahan. Also preceding him are his brothers in law, Jim Govednik, Joseph (Barbara) Govednik and William (Diane) Govednik.

He is survived by his three children. Joanna (Jeff) Johnston, Lynda (Jean-Francais) Chavatte and John (Pam) Mahan and his two adoring granddaughters, Brooke Johnston and Lola Chavatte.

Per John's wishes cremation rites have been respectfully accorded. A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel at 10:00 A.M. with military honors.
