About John Martin Martin Beck

Johann (John) Martin Beck, son of Johann Friederich and Anna Elisabetha (Brauerin) Beck, was born in the Westerwald in Rheinland-Pfalz and came to America with his parents on the ship Two Brothers from Rotterdam, arriving at Philadelphia 15 Sep 1752. Thus the Becks were Palatine immigrants. John married in 1763, probably in or near Granville Co NC, Maria Catharina Gibler, who was born 25 Dec 1742, in Germany, and died 24 Dec 1824 in Stokes Co NC, where she was also buried in the Beck-Shouse Cemetery (located in Stokes County until Forsyth County was formed in 1849). John's final illness was "a very troublesome dropsy," which "confined him to bed for ten weeks." He died at 2:00 in the afternoon of 12 Sep 1819, near the Moravian community of Bethabara. He was buried the next day, following a funeral sermon by Brother Strole, who was apparently a Moravian minister (though there's little evidence that the Becks themselves were members of the Moravian Church).

John and Maria were the parents of eleven children, including William, Frederick, Sarah, Solomon, Salome, Clara, Henry and Abraham Beck.
