John Maxey fought in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Yorktown. He is a DAR Patriot. He served as a Private under Captains William Anderson, Hardin Perkins, and John Mosely, and Colonel Harvey. The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War and one of the most important with a decisive victory for Continental Army troops led by General George Washington over British General Charles Cornwallis. Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in the field at Yorktown on October 17, 1781 effectively ending the War for Independence. The victory at Yorktown ended fighting in the American colonies. Peace negotiations began in 1782 and on September 3, 1783 the Treaty of Paris was signed formally recognizing the United States as a free and independent nation after eight years of war.

John was a son of Edward and Judith (Ford) Maxey.
