Biography
Maine Pioneers, 1623-60
John Maine; Mayne of Mayne's Point, Casco before 1648; removed to York. He, ae. 70 years, and his wife Elizabeth, ae. 60, testified 3 Jan. 1664, as to the planting of a tract of land adjoining his land at Casco, near Mayne's Point, 35 or 36 years. He bought, about 1657, a house and 60 acres of land "neare the middle of Casco Bay"; was driven away by the Indians; two sons were slain; house burnt; wife and rest of family hardly escaped with their lives. Disputed Origins
From https://www.geni.com/discussions/204190?msg=1344133
“If John Mayne was born in Hatherleigh, Devon, his father probably isn't Alexander. I've seen this explained on other sites before, though I don't have the details on my fingerprints. It's more likely that the man from Maine has a father that is too difficult to trace” Does anyone have better citations, and/ or evidence to support as son of Alexander Mayne ?
John Burke, esq., 1838 A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain and Ireland. Oxford University. p 505 GoogleBooks lists 3 children of Alexander Mayne: Richard, Jasper & Elizabeth. No John.

A previous version of this profile claimed his parents were Richard Mayne and Elizabeth Quash. This couple did have a son John, but he remained in England, married a different woman, had a different set of children and died and was buried in England in 1680.

Because he was the first settler to own the land, it was named after him. Mayne’s Point, York, ME. It was located on the peninsula of the harbor. When the territory was separated from New York it was named after the the name of the Point there on York Bay. The province was named after Mayne’s point. Proof is the original name of the province “Mayne” The state’s name comes from the province. This means the state is named after the family. York county ME has this statement about the name, showing it did exist. “Mayne Point in Yarmouth was in this northern section of the original York County that became part of Cumberland County after the split. Mayne Point in Yarmouth was in this northern section of the original York County that became part of Cumberland County after the split."

The first record of the Main family is John Maine (Mayn, Mayne, Main), b Devon, England, 1607. I believe he came to America with Thomas Weston's Wessagusset company ship Sparrow, in 1622, where he worked as a fisherman, off the banks at York, Me.
I have looked at the information about John. It says that he had two sons-in-law killed in an Native American Attack.
The only ones it could have been are Stephen and Nathan Premble- Rachel and Priscilla's husbands who were brothers. From what I can deduce Stephen and Nathan were killed in the Native American raid. Rachel married Joseph Carlisle and died giving birth to Joseph Jr. Priscilla married Joseph Carroll. Please note I have talked to a descendent of Rachel who verified this information. It has been a joy doing this research as …
