The McCoys trace their origin back to Scotland. The family was first found in Sutherland, where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Their origin there is possibly Lowland, but they had intermarried with the Highland Celtic strain, giving some a slight olive complexion and some dark or auburn hair. They were in general tall and lithe and handsome. They had a great deal of family pride and clannishness.

The McCoy Coat of Arms is a Blue with a silver chevron, on which there are two daggers pointing at a buck's head, all between three silver bears' heads. The family motto: "Manu forti," means "With a strong hand." The McCoys were in Scotland until around 1700, at which time they migrated to Ireland. From there, the McCoys started to migrate to America, which was a British Colony.

The earliest documented ancestor of the American McCoy clan is John, a Jacobite in Ireland. The Jacobites were loyal supporters of the Stuart King, James II. John McCoy was born c. 1690, probably in Sutherland, Scotland It is possible that his father was named Alexander, but this is conjecture. There is no proof of his parentage. It is believed that John migrated to Ireland around 1716 after a failed rebellion to place JamesII on the English throne in 1715. John later migrated to America about 1732. He received a grant of land in 1737 in Charles County. He purchased a 50-acre plot of land called "Neglect," in Prince George's County, Maryland, in 1742. In 1747,he purchased land in Charles County, Maryland, referred to as "Slatford's Roost Extension." John's brothers, James and Daniel, may have come from Ireland with him.

John married a woman surnamed Martin. Her first name has been lost to us. It's not clear if he married her in Scotland or Ireland, but she was with him when he left Belfast, County Antrim, for the New World. ied in Washington County, Maryland in 1762. John and his wife raised five sons - Archibald, David, William, Joel and John, Jr.

John McCoy died in Washington County, Maryland, in 1762, having become a prominent land owner in the Colonies. Upon John's death, his property was divided amongst the children, each son getting a large tract of land. If there were any daughters, their names weren't recorded. Not much is known about four of the sons. Archibald is the only one who left some documents behind.
