John McMillan, III, the only child of John McMillan, II and Rebecca Anderson McMillan, was born February 5, 1812, in the old McMillan Manse in North Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He learned the blacksmith trade from Henry Havilin of Houston, PA. He married Elizabeth C. Fulton in 1833. Elizabeth Fulton McMillan was was born February 5, 1812. John McMillan, III then married Mary Mitchell on January 1, 1835. Mary Mitchel was born November 10, 1810. She was the daughter of George Mitchell and Miss Alexander. After his apprenticeship with Henry Havilin, John McMillan ,III returned to North Strabane Township and worked his trade as a blacksmith on the farm of Ira Bebout for two years. He then bought land across the creek from the Bebout farm and built a house and a shop. He worked as a blacksmith for 45 years. John and Mary McMillan were living at Becks Mills, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1888. Mary McMillan filed a Pension Application on July 13, 1888 under the service of her son John McMillan who was killed in the Civil War. Her original attorney died and on July 5, 1889, her new attorney again sought a pension for her. A form date July 24, 1890 indicates that the application has been executed. There is no evidence in any of the pension papers that she ever received anything. John McMillan, III died August 23, 1890, at age 79. Mary Mitchell McMillan died November 17, 1890, at age 80.
