John Merwin was born at Milford, Connecticut Colony, in late July of 1735, a son of John Merwin, Jr., and ; he married Elizabeth Buckingham, probably by 1757, the estimated birth year of their son John.

He died at Milford, in his 90th year, in 1826. Elizabeth survived him for a dozen years, dying in 1838.
