John Mordaunt, 1st Viscount Mordaunt

John Mordaunt, 1st Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon was born on 18 June 1626.2 He was the son of John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough and Elizabeth Howard.3 He married Elizabeth Carey, daughter of Hon. Thomas Carey and Margaret Smith, circa 1656.4 He died on 5 June 1675 at age 48.4

He participated in several Royalist conspiracies during the Interregnum.2 He gained the rank of Captain of Horse.2 He gained the rank of Colonel of Foot.2 He held the office of High Steward of Windsor.2 In 1658 he was tried for treason but acquitted by the presiding judge's casting vote.2 He was created 1st Baron Mordaunt of Ryegate, co. Surrey [England] on 10 July 1659.2 He was created 1st Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon, co. Somerset [England] on 10 July 1659.2 He was invested as a Knight in 1660.2 He held the office of Ranger of Windsor Forest and Keeper of Windsor Great Park between 1660 and 1668.2 He held the office of Governor and Captain of Windsor Castle between 1660 and 1668.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey between 1660 and 1675.2

John Mordaunt; this gentleman obtained great fame by his zeal in the cause of King Charles II., and stood a trial during the usurpation for his exertions in behalf of the exiled monarch, but upon which he was acquitted, by the connivance chiefly, as stated by Lord Clarendon, of the celebrated John Lisle, the presiding judge. The other judges were equally divided as to the guilt or innocence of Mr. Mordaunt, and the president gave the casting vote in his favour. He supseqently made several daring but fruitless attempts to restore the king, and for all those faithful services was, eventually, elevated to the peerage, 10 July, 1659, as Baron Mordaunt, of Rygott, со. Surrey, and Viscount Mordaunt, of Avalon, in Somersetshire. His lordship and Sir John Grenvile, were the bearers of the letters which the king, prior to his restoration, addressed to Monk, to parliament, and to the corporation of London. His lordship, after the Restoration, was constituted constable of Windsor Castle, and appointed lord lieutenant, and custos rotulorum of со. Surrey.

He m. Elizabeth, dau. and sole heiress of Thomas Carey, 2nd son of Robert, Earl of Monmouth, by whom he had five sons and three dau's:

• 2 Harry, M.P., lieutenant-general in the army, and treasurer of the ordnance, to which last office he was appointed in 1699. General Mordaunt m. 1st, Margaret, dau. of Sir Thomas Spencer, of Yarnton, со. Oxford, Bart, by whom he had, with other children, John (Sin, K.B., a ceneral officer in the army. Eliza-Lucy, то. to Sir Wilfrid Lawson, Bart., of Iscil, In Cumberland. General Mordaunt m. 2ndly, Penelope, dau. and heir of William Tipping. Esq., by whom he had, Penelope, m. to Sir Monnoux Cope, Bart, of Hanwell.
• 3 Lewis, a brigadier-general in the army, who d. 2 February, 1712-13, leaving issue by two wives. One of his daua. AnneMaria, m. the Right Hon. Stephen Poyntz. of Midgham, со. Berks, and another, Sophia, m Sir Roger Martin, Bart.
• 4 Osmond, slain at the battle of the Boyne.
• 5 George, in holy orders. This gentleman m. thrice, and left by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth, dau. of Sir John D'Oyly, Bart., a dau., Anna-Maria (co-heiress), re. to Jonathan Shipley, D.D., bishop of St. Asaph, ancestor by her of the Shipley Conwys, of Bodrhyddan, со. Flint, and of the Shipley of Twyford House, Hants. and by his 3rd wife, Elizabeth, dau. of Colonel Collyer, he was father of two daus.,Mary, m. to Valentine Morris, Esq, of Piercefield, Monmouthshire. Elizabeth, m. to Sir William Mllner, Bart.

• 2 Sophia, m. to James Hamilton, Esq., of Bangor, In Ireland.
• 3 Anne, m. to James Hamilton, Esq., of Tollymore, in Ireland.

His lordship d. 5 June, 1675, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles Mordaunt, 2nd viscount, who was created Earl Of Monmouth, 9 April, 1689, and «. to the Earldom or Peterborough, at the decease of his uncle, in 1697.
