About John Morris

BIRTH: Age about 30 in July 1662. Ref: Marlene Strawser Bates and F. Edward Wright, comps, EARLY CHARLES COUNTY MARYLAND SETTLERS, 1658-1745, p. 196.

Info on family from Estelle Havis, Odessa, TX 3/21/2004: Immigrant ancestor. He made a bequest to the Quakers prior to his death, suggesting he was a Quaker himself. Land deeds in Talbot Co. identify him as being from Calvert Co - he apparently lived in Charles, Calvert and Talbot counties at different times. He bought land in Talbot Co. he called "Foxhole". Also bought an adjoining 300 acre tract he named "Fox Harbour" and 400 acres he called "Adventure" which was divided between his two daughters, Eleanor and Elizabeth.

"John Morris could have been single when he came to America because I haven't found anything on him before he married the widow Empson. John Morris and his wife, Mrs Eleanor___Empson, widow of William Empson, were in Charles Co., MD. I have no marriage date for them, but they are listed in Charles Co. Court Proceedings, 1658-1662. Eleanor was listed as 20 years of age or thereabouts; John was listed as 30 years or thereabouts in age. Eleanor was in couirt because she had "put out" her baby to be "nursed" for two years. She was listed as the widow of William Empson, but was now married to John Morris. [There are about 4 pages] of these court proceedings in Charles Co., MD. I used "Maryland Calendar of Wills" to connect Eleanor Empson Morris and her husband, John, and their two daughters, Eleanor and Elizabeth Morris and who the two daughters married. I haven't found any information on the child that Eleanor Empson Morris sent out to be wet-nursed."
