Said to have had 5 wives but only two are proven: the mother of John ["Hannah"], the mother of Hannah ("Hannah" or another?) & his widow, Elizabeth, the widow of Daniel Bradley; no children by Elizabeth.

John's last wife was Elizabeth, widow of Daniel Bradley, whom he married in 1653 at New Haven. She died in January 1683 at New Haven, Connecticut. Her maiden name may have been Sheaffe but this has not been proven. Her third husband was widower John Evarts, died 1669, whom she married 27 May 1663 at Guilford, Connecticut.

Know all men by these presents, I John Parmely of Newhaven being very sicke in body but prfect in minde, doe Institute and ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following I doe give and bequeathe to my beloved wife Elizabeth Parmely my house-lott and all my whole Estate for her to enjoy and possesse without molestation during the whole time of her life.

"And after her decease I doe give and bequeath half of my house and lott to my sonne, John Parmile of Guilford, the other half, one quarter to my Grandchild Nathaniel Parmile, the sonne of John Parmile of Guilford. And the other quarter part I give to my wife to dispose to her sonne, Stephen, if she see cause and for those goods whch shall be left at the dease my will is that my daughter Hannah Johnson the wife of John Johnson of Newhaven, and her dauter Ellen Allan ye wife of John Allen of Newhaven, should have ye greater part equally divided betwixt them and what doth remain I doe leave to her discretion to dispose as she pleaseth.

There is no mention of a daughter Mary, who married Dennis Crampton. Neither John's signature nor his mark appear on the document.

biography

Occupation: Bricklayer

He signed the Plantation Document June 1, 1639 along with others to come to America with Reverend Henry Wakefield and a group of farmers from Kent, Surrey and Sussex aboard the ship St. John under Capt. Richard Russell. He came to America at age 55 after his son John settled here. He was one of the original settlers of Guilford, Connecticut.

The village just east of New Haven was settled that fall. His home lot was at the north end of the Village Green, the site now occupied by the 1st Congregational Church. He appeared at a 1647 New Haven hearing to testify about a shoemaker's shoddy workmanship. John was voted a freeman at Guilford on May 22, 1649. He and his family returned to New Haven, where he was admitted as a freeman there on Aug. 8, 1659.

As noted above, John was a proprietor of the plantation of Guilford.. His homelot was about 1 1/4 acre on land that eventually was the site of the 1st Congregational meeting house and the buildings to its rear. He is included on the May 22, 1649 list of freeman (John Parmelin, Sr. ] with an indication that he was also a signatory on the covenant and an original "Planter". John, Sr. apparently left his Guilford properties to his son, John and removed back to New Haven where he is noted on the 1659 list of freemen.

Colonial Famlies of USA by MacKenzie, Vol.III, pg.385. At Guilford, CT in 1639 his will was probated Nov 8, 1659.

LDS Film #0207355 6/13/90; He married twice, first in Europe, Hannah Bradley, who accompanied him to this country in 1639 in Guilford, CT and died probably in New Haven, CT. He married second, Elizabeth, widow of Mr. Bradley. She married third in 1663 John Evarts of Guilford, CT and died in January 1683 in New Haven, CT.

Steiner, Fifteenth signer of the Covenant; He is listed among the passengers of the ship "Saint John", Captain Russell commanding, which sailed from England May 20, 1639, and arrived at New Haven, (then Quinnipiac), CT between July 10 and 15, 1639. With him came his wife Hannah, and his two daughters, Hannah and Mary.

John Parmelee, Sr., who was baptized at All Saints, Lewes, England, on 27 September 1584 but may have been born as much as a year earlier, was a bricklayer in England. He was married first on May 15, 1608, at All Saints to Anne Howell (b. and d. dates unknown.) They had seven children, all baptized at All Saints in Lewes:

• John, probably born 1609, buried at All Saints on Dec. 16, 1609.
• Elizabeth, baptized Dec. 3, 1610, at All Saints and also Dec.2, 1610, at St. Michael, Lewes, buried at All Saints on Feb. 16, 1612/13.
• John, baptized Sept. 6, 1612. Only son to survive
• George, baptized Dec. 11, 1614, buried at All Saints on April 14, 1615.
• Anne, baptized March 17, 1616, probably died young

Following the death of his wife, probably in 1628, John Sr. married his second wife, Hannah Wilbur, on 29 April, 1630 at St. Michael Parish in Lewes. They had two children:

• Mary, probably born about 1634, died March 16, 1667, married at Guilford, Connecticut, Sept. 16, 1660, to Dennis Crampton (1630-1689). They had 3 children.
• Hannah, baptized May 20, 1632, at St. Michael, Lewes, living as late as 1693, married at New Haven, Connecticut, on Sept. 30, 1651, to John Johnson, (1613-1681), son of Robert and Adeline Johnson. They had 9 children.

Hannah Wilbur Parmalee was buried at St. Michael, 20 Feb.,1634. John married his third wife, Elizabeth Holter, on June 1, 1635. St Michael parish has records for three children born to John Parmelee and Elizabeth Holter:

• Elizabeth, baptized Feb. 1, 1635, may have been buried Sept. 5, 1637, but probably April 13, 1638.
• John, baptized Aug. 30, 1637, buried Dec. 12, 1637.
• Martha, baptized Aug. 30, 1637, possibly buried Sept. 5, 1637.

John Parmelee, Sr.'s third wife, Elizabeth Holter Parmelee, was buried at St. Michael in 1637, around the same date as the birth and death of her youngest daughter, Martha. Her oldest daughter, Elizabeth, probably died the following April, 1638, ten days after John, Sr., married his fourth wife, Joane Cobden. St Michael parish records show one child by John and Joane Cobden:

• Rachael, baptized Nov. 5, 1638, buried Nov. 10, 1638.

If Joane Cobden Parmelee did not die around the time of her daughter Rachael's birth and death, she was almost certainly gone by the following May because there are no records of her having made the voyage to the colonies with her husband and two step-daughters.

While still on shipboard, John Parmelee, Sr., was among the signers of Guilford's Plantation Covenant, which was dated June 1, 1639. At New Haven in 1653, John married his fifth wife, Elizabeth (maiden name may have been Sheaffe) Bradley, widow of Daniel Bradley. They had no children. Although Jim Walters wrote, "He and his family returned to New Haven, where he was admitted as a freeman there on Aug. 8, 1659," he does not say how long he had been in New Haven before being admitted as a freeman, nor who was in his family at the time. His son John and daughter Hannah were both married and parents by 1653; his daughter Mary was 19 years old. It is possible that Elizabeth still had children in her household.

John died in New Haven in 1659/1660, at the age of 76, leaving his fifth wife, Elizabeth (maybe Sheaffe) Bradley Parmelee, and three living children (John, Hannah and Mary) out of the 13 children born to his first four wives. Those three children would give birth to 22 children who survived into adulthood. (Hannah: 9 children; Mary: 3: John: 10) Those 22 grandchildren would form the ancestral base of almost every Parmelee, Parmalee, Parmeley, Parmelin (but not Palmer) line in North America.
