About John Partridge, of Medfield

The 119th signer of the covenant of Dedham, establishing Dedham Massachusetts in 1636

John Partridge Male, #560, (about 1620 - 28 May 1706)

John Partridge was born about 1620 in England. Partridge (1903) gave an ancestry with John and Jane (Hagg) Partridge as ancestors. This ancestry has been greatly copied. Partridge (1999) has disproved this ancestry.1,2,3

He was granted land on 7 March 1652 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.4 He moved in 1653 to Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.4,5,6

On 18 December 1655 John, married Magdalen Bullard, at age 20, daughter of John Bullard and Magdalen Martyn, in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. By Capt Lusher. Their marriage date was recorded as 18 (10) 1655.6,7,8,9,4,5,10,3

John Partridge served in 1672 as the Clerk of the Market.6 His house, and barn were burnt during the Indian attack on Medfield during King Philip's War.5,6

He died on Friday, 28 May 1706 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1,4,5,6,3 John's will was proved on 25 June 1706 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.4

"John Partridge, with William, his brother, and sister Margery (Margaret), came to Medfield, Massachusetts, from Dedham, in 1653. He was in Dedham at least a year earlier, for, on 'ye 7 ye 1 month, 1652,' he shared, with others, in the division of 500 acres of land (see Dedham town records, vol. iii, p 211). John and William took up their house lots in Medfield, in 'Bachelors Roe,' now North street. Their lots were near each other, and another near neighbor was Thomas Mason, who married Margery Partridge, April 23, 1653, the first recorded marriage in Medfield. John and William both signed the 'proprietors agreement'...they appear to have been good and useful citizens, both serving a term as selectman, and John being chosen clerk of the market in 1672. In 1676, when Medfield was burned by the Indians, John's house and barn were destroyed, with a quantity of grain and several head of cattle."[4]

'... in the Visitation of Essex (Harl. Soc. Pub., xiii., part 1, p. 465), which was made in the year 1634, the children of Captain John Partridge, of Navestock, were John, aged about fourteen years, William, Jane and Margerett. From information obtained from the vicar of the parish of Navestock, in 1899, by Mr. Frank Harvey Partridge, of New York, it appears that, of the foregoing children, William was born in 1622, and Margerett in 1628.' The author links this information to the ages that William and Margaret (Margery) give in their wills, to suggest that '[t]hese coincidences, while they prove nothing, should ... be given consideration in clearing up the mystery of the English origin of the Medfield Partridges.'

"John, the emigrant, first came to our notice while they are en route to New England, May 18, 1650. On that day they subscribed as witnesses to the will of one John Beebe, a fellow passenger, who was taken suddenly ill and died during the voyage. This will, with the original signatures of John and William Paretridge, is on file at the state house, Hartford, Connecticut. (also copied in the NE genealogy -- MS)"[4] (The name of a John Partridge appears as the 119th signer of the covenant of Dedham, establishing Dedham Massachusetts in 1636,[5], but this may not be the same John Partridge if they didn't emigrate until 1650.Watt-266 17:43, 2 March 2015 (EST))

The brothers, John and William, apparently located in Dedham, near Boston, where in 1652 they shared in a division of lands. (Dedham Town Rec.'s, Vol. III., p. 211). In 1653 they removed to Medfield, which in that year was set off from Dedham as a separate town. They signed the Proprietors' agreement, and each took up his residence in 'Ye Bachelors' Roe', now North street. His place was near his brother William, and Thomas Mason, later husband of Margery Partridge. John and William both signed the proprietors agreement of Medfield.[4][6]

On 18 December 1655, John, married Magdalen Bullard,[7] at age 20, daughter of John Bullard and Magdalen Martyn, in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts. By Capt Lusher. Their marriage date was recorded as 18 (10) 1655. (John and Magdalen Bullard were early of Watertown and later of Medfield.) John and Magdalen Partridge had the following children:

John Partridge, born 21 Sep 1656; married Elizabeth Rockwood, then Elizabeth Adams, then Hannah Sheffield.
Hannah Partridge, born 15 Apr 1658, Medfield;[8] married Joseph Rockwood.
Mary Partridge, born 1660.
Deborah Partridge, born 16 Aug 1662, Medfield;[9] married John Adams.
Eleazer Partridge, born 20 Feb 1664-5, Medfield;[9] married Elizabeth Smith, then Elizabeth Allen.
Abiel Partridge, twin born 13 June 1667, Medfield; she died at about 2 1/2 weeks old.[9]
Experience Partridge, twin born 13 June 1667, Medfield; she died at 3 weeks old.[9]
Rachel Partridge, born 12 July 1669, Medfield;[8] married Joseph Daniel, then Theophilus Clark.
Samuel Partridge, born 22 February 1671-22, Medfield;[8] married Hannah Mason.
Zachariah Partridge, born 02 July 1674, Medfield;[8] married Mary Ellis.

The John Partridge House, built in 1659, is a fine example of early colonial architecture. Much of the original house remains and includes wide-board floors, beehive ovens, exposed hand-hewn beams and exposed second floor joists, hand-forged hardware, vertical-plank interior walls, pegged guillotine windows and hand made window panes. John Partridge Jr. built the home in 1659 after receiving a grant from the town of Medfield. Later, in 1682, John was joined by his father, John Sr. In 1974, 315 years after its building, the John Partridge House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. You can see a picture of the house at MACRIS.

In 1660, John Partridge was one of those who received a copy of the "law book" for his neighborhood.[10] He served in 1672 as the Clerk of the Market and town selectman.[4][11] In 1676, at the burning of Medfield by the Indians, John's house and barn were destroyed, together with a quantity of grain and several head of cattle during King Philip's War.[12] His name appears among the list of contributors towards the founding of Harvard College.[4]

John "Partredge" Sr. died on May 28 170-[6] at Medfield, Suffolk (now Norfolk), Massachusetts.[13] His Will was proved on June 25, 1706. Mention is made of sons John, Eleazer, Samuel, and Zachariah; daughters mentioned were Rachel, wife of Theophilus Clark; and three grandchildren: Eleazer Adams, Abadiah Adams, and Hannah Rockwood.
