John Pickworth migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

In a letter from William Bradford, Governor of Plymouth to John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts dated 6 Feb. 1631/2 John was mentioned as one who had moved from one province to the other: “John Pickworth, he came but as a soujourner to worke for a few weeks, in which time he goote a wife, and so is longe since returned duble, and hath no cause to complaine, excepte he hath goot a bad wife.”[1] Oops.

John was granted 20 acres in the non-freeman’s section of the 1636 Salem land division. On Christmas the following year he was granted ¾ acre and had a household of five.[2] On 27 Dec. 1636 Thomas Gray was “presented for defaming John Pikworth”. [3] John put in a request for a grant of land at Jeffries Creek on 28 Aug. 1637 and on 8 Nov. he was given 25 acres. He was given “3 or 4 acres of meadow to the land formerly granted him” on 20 Nov. 1639.[4]

George Williams sued John on 30 Mar. 1641 concerning some trees.[5] On 28 Feb. 1642/3 “John Pickworth presented for absence from watch”, however, he was acquitted.[6]

On 29 June 1654 “Nathaniell Masters presented for his wife being with child by him before they were married, the act having been committed in Pequott Harbor. Certificate of the fact to be sent to that town for trial in that jurisdiction”.[7]

John was sworn in as a constable for Manchester on 24 June 1656.[8] But, in the following year on 1 July “Major Hathorne brought in fines against Edw: Pitford and John Pickworth for being drunk”.[9] At the court held in June 1660 : Jno. Pickworth Sr. and his sons, John, Samuel and Joseph for a breach of the peace in fighting with Jno. Norman Sr. and John Norman Jr., Thomas Bishop and Norman’s servant. Dismissed”. On 28 Nov. 1660 Samuel Friend, constable of Manchester, reported that he had issued a summons to “John Peckworth Sr. and his sons Samuell and Joseph, as for his son John he is not in this plantation”.[10]
