About John Timothy Porter

John Porter was born about 1699 at Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island to Thomas Porter and Lois Stanley. He married Desire Sanford in April of 1725. John Porter died at Hopkinton, Washington, Rhode Island. He was buried at Hopkinton, Washington, Rhode Island.
Inscription
John Porter was buried on Nathan’s expanded Porter farm east of a driftway, a stone wall lined farmer’s road. When Nathan and his second wife Susannah Porter sold their 110 acre farm to Zebulon Weaver in 1785, the deed stipulated, “Reserving Only To my Self the buring place where my Honoured Father John Porter was buried of a Two rods square piece of land contained within the described premises & adjoining the aforesaid Driftway.” (sic) The Driftway comprised one of the western boundaries of the farm according to the description on the deed. The grave is also referred to in a deed when Zebulon Weaver’s son sold the property in 1805.

Both the old Porter Farm and John Porter’s grave was relocated in 2012, with help from then Hopkinton Deputy Town Clerk Lorraine Tarket-Arruda, local history buff Tom Helmer, and nearby farmer Bob Miner who remembered seeing the grave markers in the woods. The grave has since been record in the town records.

The gravesite is today on Hopkinton Land Trust and the historic driftway it lies beside is part of their Kenyon Crossroads Trail. There is access from both Collins Road on the south and Woodville Road from the north. The Collins Road trailhead is closer to the grave.

John Porter’s Grave GPS Location is

041.26.971 N

071.45.788 W

The grave lies on a small hillside overlooking a lovely spring fed pond. If you get to a larger pond to the west you’ve gone too far. You have to climb the stone wall and old barbed wire at a low spot and make your way around the brush to get to it. The grave markers are uninscribed “field stones”. Not far to the north is an opening in the driftway and a wagon road leading to foundations which were probably Nathan Porter’s house and farm sheds.

Technically, the grave site or cemetery is under the care of the family. Since it is in a somewhat remote location, I allowed the treefall and brush to continue to provide protection from the merely curious and potential vandals. Family members can work with the Land Trust board members in the future, as desired.

Notes

  • Stevenson, Porter Family History, Vol 1, p.83. This information may be incorrect as it was taken from an autobiography of Sanford Porter, grandson of John Porter. At the time of the writing, Sanford thought his grandfather's name was Timothy, not John. It's been speculated that Sanford's father, Nathan, was partially raised by his older brother Timothy, thus causing the confusion.
  • On 18 Jul 1764, a John Porter sold 30 acres of land in Hopkinton to Nathan Porter for 360 pounds. The wife of this John was named Rebekah.[5]
  • On 19 Jan 1769, a John Porter sold 25 acres of land in Hopkinton to his son Nathan Porter for 150 Spanish Milled Dollars[6], which Nathan then leased back to John on the same day. The wife of this John Porter is named Thankful Porter on the lease, and Nathan calls her his mother-in-law.[7] This is thought by Joseph Stevenson to be the same John Porter as Desire's husband.[8]
  • After his death, an inventory of John Porter's estate was taken at the request of his widow, who remains unnamed, and entered into record on 8 Jul 1771. On 5 Aug 1771, Nathan Porter was appointed by the Hopkinton Town Council as the adminstrator of his father's estate.[9]
