About John Potter, Sr. (I)
Anthony Potter, born in England about 1627/8, emigrated to Ipswich, MA. Here he married about 1647/8, Elizabeth Whipple, daughter of John Whipple of Ipswich. She died in 1648.
By 1651/2, he married Elizabeth Stone, 1628/9-1712, daughter of Gregory and Lydia (___) Stone of
Cambridge, MA. He died in 1690.
The tombstone of his wife (Elizabeth Stone Potter), at Ipswich, reads:
"Here lys burried Mrs Elizabeth Potter who died March ye
10 1712 ages 83 years, A tender mother a prudent wife, At God's command resigned her life."
His birth and marriage are not found in Ipswich VR.

During the American Revolution, John Potter was a lieutenant and paymaster in the Worcester County Regiment. He received the rank of Captain in the Massachusetts militia after the period of the American Revolution. On two occasions, Captain Potter's Brookfield Company was called on to suppress the tumult of Shay's Rebellion in this area. John Potter built a house in North Brookfield, MA (known as Potter's Mansion). The house was completed in 1789 but it was moved to Storrowton Museum in West Springfield, MA in 1929. Storrowtown Museum is located at "The Big E" Exposition Grounds (fairgrounds for 5 New England States). John Potter's first wife Lydia died in 1781. He married Rhoda Burnap in 1782. The Mansion stayed in the family for five generations (family of John Potter and Rhoda Burnap) before it was moved to the Storrowtown Museum.
