From Ancestry Tree of David Brown: John Prince Added by DAVIDHUNTERBROWN1963 on 21 Dec 2008 “John Prince was born in February 1710 in (?Frederick) Virginia. He married Sarah Berry about 1739 and evidently a second time, as his will names “Mary” as his wife. He moved to Carolina about the time (1766) his Earle son-in-law did, and settled in Spartan District, where he was a planter. During the Revolution, he established “Fort Prince” on the Tyger River. He was a member of the Second Provincial Congress, 1775-1776; of the first General Assembly; and the Counsel of Safety. He was Commissioner for the District; and a member of the South Carolina Senate, 1778-80. He died 16 February 1782. He is represented by descendants in the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of South Carolina.”

John Prince, known as John Prince, Esquire, in South Carolina, was born in 1710 in Virginia and moved shortly after 1761 to Frederick County, Virginia where he operated a boarding school for boys. He was a large man physically, of reddish complexion and had a very powerful and impressive personality. By profession he was a "school master" and operated a boy's school in Virginia and South Carolina. His first grant of land in South Carolina was given him in the present county of Spartanburg, on the Tyger River, near the North Carolina Line, April 29, 1768. He was a patriot, was a member of the First South Carolina Provincial Congress 1775-1776 and a member of the Council of Safety.

John Prince, Esquire wrote the following letter, when there was disaffection in the ranks of the Militia, to the cause of the Royal Colony. Actual violence had broken out and the troops of Governor William Drayton had to be called to put down the violence. The letter was written from "Edgehill" the plantation home of the Prince family.
