John Rockefeller served in the Revolutionary War. At one time he was a buyer of cattle for the army. He was elected First Lieutenant, Captain David Jones Company, Third Regiment, Hunterdon County, New Jersey Militia, Colonel David Chambers, April 01, 1775. At battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, June 28, 1778; afterwards served as First Lieutenant to the end of the war in companies commanded by Captains John Phillips and John Schenck, Third Regiment, and Captain Arthur Gray, Second Regiment, Hunterdon County,New Jersey Militia, Revolutionary War. John Rockefeller of Revolutionary fame, was a member of a New Jersey regiment that was part of Sullivan's army in the campaign against the Indian in central and western New York in 1779. Historians state that Sullivan's soldiers were so charmed with the " Finger Lake" and the Genesee region that, when the Senecas were placed on reservations in Washington's administration, many soldiers returned to the new country and made homes there. John Rockefeller's descriptions were what induced his sons, Henry and Samuel, to pioneer that choice part of New York State
