About John Rubin Cook, Jr.

The information in this memorial came from federal, state, and county documents.

John Cook, Jr was born in North Carolina in 1797 to John Cook, Sr and Elizabeth Coleman. It has been speculated that his middle name was Reuben, but there is no evidence of this in the records.

There is no death record, but it is known that he died between the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

John Jr moved with his parents to Kentucky about 1800, and from there to Bedford County, Tennessee. They made a third move to the Western Tennessee Military District following the Chickasaw Cession of September 20, 1816, and the opening of these lands to white settlement. They arrived at a place on Indian Creek in the winter of 1816-17 that became a part of Wayne County, Tennessee in 1818. The location was later known as Cravens Mill and then Martins Mills, and is near the present community of Houston.

John Jr obtained the first marriage bond issued in Wayne County (1818) for his marriage to Deborah Martin, also of Cravens Mill.

John, Deborah, and eleven children moved to nearby Tishomingo County Mississippi in 1842, to a site that became a part of Alcorn County in 1870. Consequently, some of the family records are in Alcorn. They moved again in the 1850s to Upshur County, Texas, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

John and Deborah Martin had 12 children, 11 of whom were born in Tennessee, and 1 in Mississippi. Three of the sons disappeared from the records at the time of the Civil War.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 18 2021, 6:04:31 UTC
