About John Sanford, II, of Newport
John was a large land owner, very prominent in Portsmouth RI. He raised horses and sheep. He also shipped horses and wool to his brother Peleg in Barbados.
He was made a freeman 5/17/1653.
6/4/1655 Became Chief Magistrate in Portsmouth. He was General Treasurer of the colony from 1655-1664 and represented Portsmouth in the General Assembly.
He was a royalist and was appointed to the council of Sir Edmond Andros but never served.
In his later years moved to E. Greenwich where he died.
John used a armorial seal which appears on Portsmouth Documents still today.
At Portsmouth John was a Farmer. He moved to Newort in 1704 and became a Butcher.
