- 3. Samuel² Sanford (Pres. John¹), of Portsmouth, born 14 July 1635, died 18 March 1712/13 (Austin, op. cit.).
- He married first, in October 1662, Sarah Wodell, born in October 1644, died 15 Dec. 1680 (Austin, op. cit.), daughter of William and Mary Wodell of Portsmouth; and—
- secondly, 13 April 1686, Susanna Spatchurst, died 13 Nov. 1723 (Arnold’s Vital Records, vol. 4, pp. 36, 89), daughter of William and Elizabeth Spatchurst of Bermuda.
- He was a breeder of horses and sheep for the Barbados market (cf. Sanford Papers, op. cit.), but took little part in public affairs.
- On 25 Feb. 1653/4 he witnessed a Portsmouth deed (Portsmouth Town Records, p. 311) and on 20 Nov. 1653 he receipted for his legacy under his father's will (ib., p.324).
- On 3 March 1656/7 he was received as an inhabitant of Portsmouth (ib., p. 75) and on 18 May 1658 he was made a Freeman of the Colony (Austin, op. cit.).
- On 3 June 1661 he was on a Coroner's inquest at Portsmouth (Portsmouth Town Records, p. 107).
- On 27 April 1670 and on 29 April 1673 he was on a petit jury (ib., pp. 152, 175) and was on a Grand Jury on 14 April 1677 (ib., p. 192).
- On 16 Jan. 1667 his ear mark was entered (ib., p. 275).
- His will, dated 30 April 1709, was proved 13 April 1713. The executrix was his wife Susanna.
- He bequeathed to his daughter Elizabeth Allen, his son John, and his daughter Mary Arnold. He gave 1/ each to his sons William and Samuel “if he be living", and left legacies to his sons Restcome, Peleg, Elisha, Endcome, Esbon, Francis, Joseph, Benjamin and Joshua Sanford and to his daughter Elizabeth (Portsmouth Town Council vol. 2, p. 211; cf. Austin, op. cit., p. 171).
