About John Satterthwaite

John Satterthwaite was the oldest son of Michael Satterthwaite of Tock How and Margaret Dodgson.

John Satterthwaite is listed in the 1843 family tree as being married to a Bridget. It seems likely to the author that this Bridget is a Bridget Nicholson, who married a John Satterthwaite in Hawkshead on June 27, 1791.

A birth date is not listed for John on the marriage record or on the 1843 tree, but there is a possible death record that gives him a birth year of around 1771.This ties up with a baptism record for a John Satterthwaite, born around 1771, having been baptised on June 27, 1791, the date of John's marriage to Bridget. This is a relatively late baptism, and it seems to the author that John may have been baptised and married on the same day.

The Satterthwaites were well known to be Quakers and were persecuted for their faith on multiple occasions. It seems to the author, given that the date of his marriage, baptism and likely birth all tie up, that this John Satterthwaite gave up his Quaker faith and converted to Church of England (the religion in St Michael & All Angels, the church where they likely married) in order to marry Bridget. This is where the Quaker faith ends in this branch of the family, and where the family seems to convert to a more conventional CofE lifestyle, shown much later in this branch of the tree by members of the family going off to fight in WWI (which many Quakers famously did not participate in, due to their non-violent principles).

It seems likely to the author that this John Satterthwaite was resident at Roger Ground for some time, and was a farmer there. Two pieces of evidence point to this:

1. Names and dates of children born to a John Satterthwaite of Roger Ground roughly correspond to the names and birth dates of his children listed in the 1843 family tree.
2. John Satterthwaite of Tarn Hows, another John Satterthwaite living in Hawkshead at the time, has a record of burial in 1837, by which time this John Satterthwaite still appears to be alive.
3. The names of the children of a John Satterthwaite of Tock How do not line up with the names of this John Satterthwaite's children, and so he could not have inherited Tock How.

Roger Ground, which is now available to rent as a holiday let, is a large farm. As John Satterthwaite is listed as a Husbandman on marriage, but did not live at Roger Ground at that time (his eldest son, Michael, being born while he was a labourer at Crofthead), it is most likely that he had a leasehold of Roger Ground and was not the owner.

In the 1841 census, John Satterthwaite is listed with his wife, Bridget Satterthwaite, and being around 70 years old. He is also listed as either living with or visiting a Thomas Satterthwaite and his wife, Margaret, as well as their many children. From the names of the children present, we can deduce that this is the John Thomas listed in the 1843 tree.

It seems likely to the author, given that a John Satterthwaite of an appropriate age cannot be found in the 1851 census and that the baptism & marriage point to his year of birth being in 1771, that this John Satterthwaite is the John Satterthwaite buried on 10 January 1845, who is said to have died in Southwaite.
