His first wife was Elizabeth Holder, who died in 1797. He then married Johanna Müller, the widow of Johannes Hauser.

York Moravian records give his birthdate as Sept. 20, 1746.

John Schemel joined the Moravian Church when he married Hannah Miller (Müller). There were no children in this marriage.

Entries from the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina:

2:915, 25 Feb 1775, letter from Friedrich and Elizabeth Marshall from Charlestown [Charleston SC?] to Br. Graff:...Our teamsters showed us all love, not only Adam Elrod and Heinrich Hauser, who were our companions, but also Heinrich Spoenhauer and Shemel, who had the other wagon; and I must say that they did all in their power to serve us, as we also did for them.

Brother Bagge was in Bethabara and spoke with Capt. Heinrich Schmid's lieutenant, Schemel, who said that he had orders to notify all the settlers in Wachovia in the Friedberg, Friedland, and Muddy Creek Settlement to meet tomorrow at Steiner's mill, where the proposition will doubles be laid before them [referring to enrollment and drilling of 4,000 militia men].

For the first time in Wachovia there was the unpleasant event that all the Taxables from Friedberg, Friedland, and the Maryland Settlement were obliged to meet at Stiner's mill, where Capt. Heinrich Schmidt took the names of all the young men, as belonging to his Company, and therefore as enlisted. It was learned from his Lieutenant, Schemel, who is also a member of the Committee, that this would not have happened had not some from the Maryland Settlement attended the election of a Captain, Lieut. John Schemel appears in a list of men mentioned in the diaries who served in the military. John Schemel appears on the list of farm owners in Wachovia 1779 and later. He is listed between George Hauser and Peter Binckele.

A note from John Schemel and Joseph Herrisen, 15 May 1776, testifying that Traugott Bagge is a True Friend to American Liberty, Salem, May 30. The widow Hanna Hauser, having informed the Conferences of her intention, was married today, by Br. Jacob Bonn as justice of the peace, to the widower Johannes Schemel, and went with him to his home near Bethania. Feb. 24, 1813. The married Br. Johann Schemel fell asleep gently last night, and at the service this evening his departure was announced in the usual manner. He's buried in Bethabara Moravian God's Acre in Forsyth County, North Carolina.
