Biography

JOHN SHATSWELL OF IPSWICH MASSACHUSETTS

The main source of reference for John is “The Great Migration Begins- Immigrants to New England 1620-1633 Volume 3” by Robert Charles Anderson 1995.

John came from England around 1633 although no ships passenger lists refer to him by name. He was one of the first settlers of Ipswich in Essex County, Massachusetts and arrived with his wife Johanna and son Richard, together with his brother Theophilus and sisters Mary and Margaret, who was already married to Matthew Curwin. His other sister Sybil did not leave England.

At first John got into trouble and was fined 11 shillings for distempering himself with drink at Agewam. Fortunately, he cleaned himself up and became a church deacon, while obtaining and managing quite a large estate of farmland and a house. He was described as a yeoman and died in either 1646 or 1647 when his will was proved.

In his will John bequeathed to his son all his houses and land except part of the 25- acre lot from the upper end of the plowed land to the sea and 16 acres of pasture beyond Muddy River which he gave to his wife. Richard intended to marry Rebecca Tuttle but if he did not, his wife was to have her in the house as a helper. If Richard and Johanna should both die without issue, the land remaining should be divided between his brother Theophilus and sister’s children. He gave Theophilus his best cloth suit and his sister Webster seven yards of stuff “for to make her a sute”.

The inventory of his belongings at death accounted for £307: a dwelling house and homestall with barn, cowhouse, orchard yard with appurtenances, worth £100 and several parcels of land, meadow and upland worth £207. He also had a swarm of bees and £18 in England on bond. He left four Bibles and several books to the value of 15 shillings.

John was born around 1597. His wife Johanna married him in England around 1627, and when widowed married John Green of Charlestown. She died in 1673.

The Shatswell, Tuttle and Holyoke families were closely intertwined and we will never know what actually occurred. Rebecca Tuttle might be the daughter of Johanna with her first husband Richard Tuttle. Ann Tuttle nee Taylor was the wife of Edward Holyoke when Johanna was married to John Green.

John Shatwell was sold a plot of 20 acres of meadow and upland in Ipswich from Josias Cobham and John Ilsly which is recorded in a deed of 1648. This land was sold about 8 years since and was now in the possession of Richard Shatswell.

In 1634 then was given him “a portion of land lying net to Henry Short northward in 60 rods broad and unto the path leading towards Merrimac River in equal length with Henry Short and others.” This descended to Richard’s possession.

John became a deacon of the church as well as managing his land. He possessed a planting lot on Town Hill which he sold before 1638 to John Baker. He had granted to him in 1636 “about six acres of ground, upon part of which he built a house, being between Mr Wade’s house and lot on the east, and Mr Firman’s on the west, and Goodman Webster’s on the north-east.” John is noted in March 1642 in the book New England Register (see below) as follows: “In 1641, Goodwin Wyatt and John West bought a cow which promptly died. They took the matter to court, for John Shatswell and Humphrey Griffin were appointed to view a dead cow at John Wyatt’s”. Goodman Wyatt owned land at Ipswich in 1638.

He seems to have retained a portion, as a disagreement arose between John and Richard over their father's will and John agreed, "my brother Richard shall enjoy a highway of one rod wide through my pasture at Muddy River for ye driving of cattle," having "bars next ye common."
