Kentucky: John Simms (signed Symmes) and Peter Higdon were in
Cartwright's Settlement, Washington Cty. ca 1800. John Symmes and wife,
Eliz., 1790 sold land to Chas. Montgomery in Wash. Cty, Hardin Creek.
1808, Wm. Wright and wife, Eliz., and Thos. and William were witnessess.
This is around Bardstown, Ky. and is a hotbed still of the Md.
Catholic settlers. Also home of Francis Scott Key and a great tourist
attraction if you like my old Kentucky Home. The area is full of
wonderful old early Catholic Churches, monastaries, Catholic girls'
schools and is steeped in lore.
By the way, the migration path for
these settlers was by land to Cincinnati where they navigated the Ohio
River as far as they could go. The Settlements, about 10, were all
located at salt licks - the only way of preserving the food was salt.
For the most part, the Washington, Nelson Cty. area of Ky. was settled
by Catholic families scattered among non-catholics who frowned on all
the fun, dancing, singing, racing horses, etc., their catholic neighbors
had.
Back the the John Simms in Ky. Who might he be? I have Eliz.
Simms b1808 Ky. (father, Samuel Simms) married Francis Yager 16-8-1828,
Wash. Cty., Ky. In the obit of their son, Samuel C. Yager, it states.
"on his mother"s side, he was of English descent, the founder of this
branch of the family coming to America in colonial days with Lord
Baltimore and locating in Md. The male members of the family later
fought in the war of 1812 and were also participants in the Mexican War."
