About John Simpson, Jr.

Ref: Rhoda Taylor Fone: John Simpson Jr., stated his age as 69 in his 1748 deposition. He futher stated that he was born within 10 milesof Woodstock (George Brent's plantation in Stafford Co., Virginia) The instant John's last Will and Testament named his wife Silen Simpson as Executrix.

In 1723, John appears on a Census of Stafford County, Virginia with aJoseph Gist (Guess) as resident of the area of Hunting Creek where heand Joseph are believed to have rented land. The property was leasedto John and Joseph by Sampson Darrow. By 1743, Lawrence Washington had purchased or inherited 5,000 acres of land named Little Hunting Plantation. Lawrence purchased this land in sections the last part which was obtained by 1750. At about that time, Ann Simpson Gist was living on the property. This land was inherited by George Washington in 1752, at the time of his older brother Lawrence's death and eventually became known as Mount Vernon.

The depostion in full reads: "John Simpson of Stafford Co., Planter, aged about 69 years ... deposeth and saith that he hath been informed ... that he was born within 10 miles of Woodstock in the County aforsdand while he was a child this Depont's father and mother removed to live on the sd plantation of Woodstock and continued there until he wasabout 15 or 16 years of age when he removed about a mile from thence and continued thdere till he came of full age and married and hath lived ever since until this time within 20 miles of the said plantation.That this depont perfectly well remembers Geo. Brent, Gent., dec'd who lived at Woodstock when this deponents father and mother removed there ... That this depont always understood and was informed by his father, in Particular Who Served his time with the first named George Brent and the sd. Geo. was born in England and came thence to Va."

John's Will: (Ref: Stafford County Will Book (liber o), pp. 321-22):In the Name of God Amen, I John Simpson of Stafford County being sickbut of perfect mind ... Do make this my last will and Testament that is to say first I recommend my Soul into hands of God ... Body to buried in decent manner. Imp, I will give and bequeath to Ann Sudderth, dau. of Benjn. Sudderth one feather bed and furniture and on young pacing horse of one years old. Imp, I give to Alexander Simpson two Coatsand my riding Saddle. Imps, I give to my beloved wife Silent Simpsonall the remaining part of my Personal Estate .. And Lastly, I appointmy beloved wife Silent Simpson my whole and sole Executrix ... 20th May 1756 /s/ John (his mark) Simpson. At court held for Stafford County 10th August 1756 Last Will Presented into ... Court proved admittedto record ... Certificate granted for obtaining probate. On 14 September 1756, at page 322, the apprasial and inventory of John Simpson's estate was entered and admitted with a total of 51:8:6 lbs.

The Ann Sudderth mentioned above is believed to be the granddaughter of Silent (Bryant) Jefferies Simpson from her first marriage to ThomasJefferies.

Aug. 7, 1790 - Catherine Halley, of lawful age, testified in District Court in the town of Dumfries during the case James Halley vs. James Bland. She stated that John Simpson married her mother and lived with them many years. During this time John said that he had 2 brothers, Thomas and George, who were both dead. Another brother, Richard, was the youngest brother and the only one living. Catherine, her mother and John Simpson once visited Richard Simpson.
