• .... In the early settling of Rhode Island there came thither a number of the same of Smith, locating in various part of the territory now the State. Ancient Providence, out of which town have have since been crated several of the towns now forming a part of Providence county, was home of the many descendants especially of John Smith, "the miller," and Christopher Smith, the Christian name of the wife of each being Alice. The former John Smith the miller, was here a contemporary of Roger Williams. Both were banished from Massachusetts by order of the General Court, in September, 1635, and together they came to Rhode Island, Smith being one of the company of Six, Williams included, who in the spring of summer of 1636 crossed the river from Seekonk, and took up their residence on the west side, making the first settlement of the English or whites in the territory. Mr. Smith was a man of considerable importance in the settlement. By agreement he was to have a certain tract of land in the valley if he would set up a a mill. This valley comprised all the land between the west branch of Moshassuck river and the hill to the east of Jefferson Plains; from Smith street on the south to Orms street on the North. And in this valley mr. Smith set up a grist mill near the first stone lock of the Blackstone canal; the privilege descended to his posterity and for many years has been used for manufacturing purposes. Mr. Smith was town clerk in 1641. Previous to his coming to Rhode Island he was at Dorchester. Of his children, John and Elizabeth, the former married Sarah Whipple, and was a man of prominence in Providence, serving often as town clerk, ensign and deputy. His children were; John, Sarah, Alice, Mary, Joseph, Benjamin, Israel, Daniel, Elisha and William, the sons all being residents of Providence excepting Elisha and William, who later were inhabitants of what became Smithfield.

• (I) John Smith, known as "John the Miller," was born in England in 1595, and came to Providence with Roger Williams in 1636. He operated a gristmill on the Mashausick river and was a man of importance in the community, serving in 1641 as town clerk. He died in 1648, and Alice, his wife, died in 1650.
• (II) John Smith, son of John, was also a miller. He served as town clerk of Providence from 1672 to 1676. He married Sarah Whipple.
• (III) John Smith (3) was a miller, like his father and grandfather, as was the last of the name to follow that business. He died in 1737, and Hannah, his wife, survived until Sept. 5, 1756.

• John Smith, the first of the name in Rhode Island, was native of England, born in 1595, and came to Providence with Roger Williams in 1636. he was known as "John the Miller," as he owned a gristmill, and he died in 1648. He had two children, John and Elizabeth, the former of whom married Sarah Whipple, they becoming the parents of ten children. Benjamin, the second son of John (2), was married, in 1693, to Mercy Angell and (second) to Mercy Waterman, and had fourteen children. His son John, the eldest of the family, was born Dec. 8, 1694, and resided in the town of Glocester, R. I., where he married Martha Mowry, they having seven children, of whom Rufus was the second son. He was born May 11, 1730, in Glocester, R. I., and there married Nov. 12, 1751, Mercy Taft. He made his home in Glocester and Burrillville, where he was a land owner and farmer, and his children were; James, Rhoda, Sylvai, Docia, Chad, Arca, Sabra, Zadock and Paul.

• (I) John Smith, a miller by occupation, was born in 1595 in England and settled first at Dorchester, Mass. He was banished from Massachusetts in September, 1635, and was with Roger Williams and four others when the settlement was made at Providence in 1636. He was allowed a grant of land on condition that he would set up a mill for the grinding of corn. John Smith (Miller) was a confidential friend of Roger Williams and was an important man in the Colony. He was chosen town clerk in 1641, and in 1647 was a delegate from Providence to Portsmouth to organize a government under the charter. He died in 1648, survived by his wife, Alice, who died in 1650.
• (II) John Smith (2), son of John, was also a miller. He served as deputy from 1666 to 1672, and as town clerk from 1672 to 1676. He died in 1682. His wife was Sarah Whipple, born in 1642, who died in 1687.
• (III) Benjamin Smith, son of John (2), was born in 1672, and died April 23, 1751. he married (first) April 12, 1693, Mercy Angell, born in 1675, who died Sept. 3, 1721. He married (second) June 11, 1730, Mercy Waterman, who died in 1750.

• John1 Whipple born abt. 1617 in England; died 16 May 1685 in Providence, Rhode Island He married Sarah ( ___ ) abt 1639-40. She was born abt. 1624 probably in England, died in 1666 in Providence. Both are buried in the North Burial Ground in Providence. John emigrated to Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1632 and removed his wife and eight children to Providence in 1659 where he played a prominent role in the development of both town and colony. Three more children were born there.

• John Whipple (c. 1617 - 1685)[2] was an early settler of Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who later settled in Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, where the family became well established.

• 1. Captain JOHN WHIPPLE, one of the early settlers at Providence, R. I., was born in England about 1616 or 1617, and died May 16, 1685. What part of England he came from is not known. History states that in 1630 about fifteen hundred persons landed in Boston from England. "Oct. 3, 1632, he was ordered to pay 3s. 4d. to his master, Israel Stoughton, for wasteful expenditure of powder and shot." As he was apprenticed to Stoughton, it is only fair to suppose that he came to this country with him. In 1637, he received a grant of land at Dorchester Neck. He married his wife, Sarah, at Dorchester about the year 1639-40, and they united with the church at Dorchester in 1641. He was a house-carpenter by trade, and owned a house and forty or fifty acres of land near Neponset village. He lived at Dorchester about eighteen years, and during that time there were born unto him six sons and two daughters.

• John Whipple was in Dorchester, Mass., as early as 1632, in service to Isreal Stoughton, carpenter. He received a grant of land at Worchester neck in 1637. He married his wife Sarah in Dorchester in 1639 or '40, They united with the church in Dorchester in 1641, He owned a house and forty or fifty acres of land near what is now called Neonset Village. In 1658 he sold his estate in Dorchester to James Minot and the same year, or the year following, removed to Providence, where he received an allotment of land July 29, 1659. He and his son John took the oath of allegiance in 1666. He was member of the town council in 1669, and received a license to keep an ordinary in 1674, On the tomb stones of John and Sarah Whipple, in the north burial-ground in Providence, are the following inscriptions:

• CAPT. JOHN WHIPPLE, Sen., was an early settler of Dorchester, Mass. He was born in England about 1616 or 1617, and emigrated from that counrty as early as 1632. His employment was that of a carpenter, having learned his trade with Josiah Stoughton. .... etc.

• Mrs. Sarah Whipple died in the year 1666, aged 42. Her husband died May 16, 1685, aged 68. His will was made May 8, 1685. He and his wife were first buried near his residence, but as this with other burial places were needed for public uses in the opening of Benefit Street, their remains were removed to the North Burial Ground, where their tombstones are to be seen.

1676, March 30- His house was burned by Indians. Tradition states the town records in his custody were saved by being thrown into the mill pond and later rescued.

1681/82, February 22- He made his will, which was proven 2 June 1682. Inventory valued at 90 pounds, 1 shilling, and 9 pence.

John Smith was born in Providence RI, and baptized 1638. He was made Ensign November 6,1 654, juryman 1661, deputy 1666-72, and town clerk 1672-76. In 1682, his home was burned by Indians. The town records in his custody were saved by being thrown into the millpond and later rescued. He died in 1682. His father John Smith, born in 1595 in England, was one of 5 who joined Roger Williams to make the first settlement at Providence, RI.
