MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 3 John Davis Smith, born in Carroll County, Georgia, was the son of George W Smith and Lilla Humphries Smith. One of eight children, he had to work hard as a child on the family farm to help in subsistence farming.

John fell in love with his first cousin, Lula Holt, and the two were allowed to marry on Christmas Eve 1899. In the 1900 census record, the family is found in Carroll County, Georgia. In subsequent census records, the family lived in Paulding and Carroll Counties (depending upon where the county line was drawn) where John made a living as a farmer.

John and Lula raised nine children to adulthood. Sadly, one daughter died of tuberculosis as a young wife in 1926. John signed her death certificate himself. One can only imagine the grief he must have felt.

John enjoyed telling funny stories around the kitchen table at night. His children would still recount some of the stories even after they were grown.

John died in the summer of 1950 and his funeral was held at Concord Baptist Church, where many of his relatives are buried. The Reverend John Virna Hart presided at the funeral. J V Hart was the father-in-law of John Smith's son, Murdock.
