About John Jost Snyder, UEL
John Snider was born on 23 Jan 1764 at Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Simon Snyder and Mary Lane. John A., Sr. (son of Simon Snider) was a Loyalist.[1]
On 3 Mar 1831, John declared that he had enlisted in the Royal Yorkers under Sir John Johnston where he had served for about one year. He had then transferred to the Royal Rangers under Major Edward Jessup where he served for about three years.[2] On 8 Jul 1780, John Snider arrived in Quebec from Saratoga. He may have served in Capt. Daniel McAlpin’s American Volunteers. On July 20th, he enlisted in the same regiment as his father. He served in 1780, ’81, and ’83.
John married Elizabeth Amey, born 16 Sep 1770, daughter of Nicholas Amey, a Loyalist.[3] John and Elizabeth settled in the same township as his father, Simon, in 1784.[4] John Snider and Thomas Markland certified on 3 Mar 1831 that John and his father Simon were among the first inhabitants of the township in 1784.[5]
The Ernestown Township First Patent Map had Elizabeth (Amey) Snider on Lot 27, Con. 5. John Snider/Snyder was recorded on a number of lots which included Lot 28, Con. 5. John’s name was also on Lot 31, Con. 5, with 50 acres. Nicholas Amey had the rest of this lot. Wilton Creek passed through all three of these lots. John’s name was also recorded on the west half of Lot 22, Con. 3 and the west half of Lot 23, Con. 3.[6]

Nicholas, b. Abt 1791 (1852 Canada Census) Abraham, b. 23 Feb 1793 Simon, b. Abt or Bef 1797 Sarah Snider, b. 1795. On 27 Jan 1818, Sarah Snider of Ernest Township made a land petition for 200 acres. She stated she was the daughter of John Snyder, a Loyalist of Ernest Township. John Snider certified the petition. On 27 Feb 1818, the petition was granted.[7][8] John, b. Abt or Bef 1800 George, b. Abt or Bef 1806 Susannah, b. Abt or Bef 1806, m. Hartman William, b. Abt or Bef 1813 Mary b. Abt or Bef 1813, m. Wood Edward, b. Abt or Bef 1814 Peter Rebecca, m. Hartman On 20 Jan 1810, John Snider made a land petition for 200 acres for his eldest son Isaac Snyder who had been a lunatic from birth. John stated he was a Loyalist of Ernestown. Thomas Dorland was to be Isaac’s agent. Davis Hawley certified and witnessed the petition. The petition was approved.[9]
From 1812 to 1814, a Private John Snyder served in the 1st Regiment of Glengarry Militia. On 8 Feb 1819, John Snyder, a yeoman and Loyalist of Ernestown Township, made a land petition. He had arrived in the township in 1784 and had married Elizabeth Amey, the daughter of Nicholas Amey, a Loyalist of the same township. Nicholas had given him the south-west 50 acres of Lot 31, Con. 5 in the township. John requested the deed to that land. Nicholas Amey certified that he had given the land to John.[10]
On 3 Mar 1831, John Snider, a yeoman of Ernestown Township, made a land petition to have his name put on the Loyalist List. He had enlisted in the Royal Yorkers under Sir John Johnston where he served for about one year. He then transferred to the Royal Rangers under Major Edward Jessup where he served for about three years. Six of his children had already received land as the sons and daughters of a Loyalist. Thomas Markland certified that John and his father Simon were among the first inhabitants of the township in 1784. On 7 Jul 1831, it was recommended that John’s name be recorded on the Loyalist List.[11]
