Accident No. 11. – January 30. Occurred at the Arcadian Mine.

John Somero and William H. Vincent were employed in a drift at the 4th level, No. 4 shaft. They drilled nine holes in the drift and charged them. Vincent then went to the shaft to prevent anyone from passing. Somero remained in the drift to fire off the holes. Before he had fired off the last hole, the first hole that he had fired, went off. Somero told how the accident happened when he was brought to the surface. He said, “I lingered a little too long after setting fire to the fuse of the first hole. The blast from the first hole knocked me down but did not injure me, while the second tore off my right leg; the other seven adding no further injury.” Somero was conscious when brought to the surface, and although terribly mangled, lived eight hours when death relieved him from his sufferings.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

The jury returned the following verdict: “That John Somero came to his death by being accidentally blasted, on the 30th day of January, A.D. 1899.”

Onnettomuus nro 11. 30. tammikuuta. Sattui Arcadian Mine -kaivoksessa.

John Somero ja William H. Vincent olivat työssä kuilun nro 4 tason 4 rintauksella. He porasivat yhdeksän reikää ja panostivat ne. Vincent meni kuilulle estämään ketään pääsemästä ohitseen. Somero jäi rintaukselle sytyttämään panoksia. Ennen kuin hän oli ehtinyt sytyttää viimeistä reikää, ensimmäinen rei'istä jo pamahti. Kun Somero oli saatu tuotua maanpinnalle, hän kertoi miten onnettomuus oli tapahtunut. Hän sanoi: “Viivyttelin hiukan liian kauan sytytettyäni ensimmäisen reiän tulilangan. Ensimmäisen reiän räjähdys paiskasi minut kumoon muttei vahingoittanut minua, mutta toinen räjähdys repäisi oikean jalkani irti; muut seitsemän räjähdystä eivät aiheuttaneet lisävammoja.” Somero oli tajuissaan, kun hänet tuotiin maanpinnalle, ja vaikka oli kauhistuttavasti runneltu, hän eli vielä kahdeksan tuntia ennen kuin kuolema vapautti hänet tuskistaan.

Tapaturmatutkintaa johti rauhantuomari ("Justice") Fisher.

Valamiehistö antoi seuraavan päätöksen: “John Somero sai surmansa jouduttuaan tapaturmaisesti räjähdykseen 30. tammikuuta 1899.”
