John Sorbie was born on 22 October 1867 in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland, son of Gavin and Isabella (Fleming) Sorbie.

In 1892, John Sorbie married Janet "Jessie" Violet McCrae at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

In 1928, his daughters, Violet, age 33, and Agnes Sorbie, age 29, left Scotland and their mother, Jessie Sorbie of 34 Home Street, Edinburgh, to take passage on the ship, Duchess of Bedford, from Greenock, Scotland to arrive, on 26 October 1928, in Quebec, Canada (a).

In 1929, his wife, Janet Sorbie and their children, Margaret, age 27, Christina, age 15, and John, age 24, took passage on the ship, Montroyal, from Greenock, Scotland to arrive, on 4 May 1929, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They were joining with John at 28 Alexander Street, Toronto, Canada.

In 1947, John Sorbie, age 79, died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
