John Beeby Jr., (2.John2, 1.Thomas1) b. ABT 1600 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England.[ii] He married Rebecca Ladd, 1627 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England,[iii] b. 1605 in England, d. BEF 1650 in England. John died 18 May 1650.[iv] He was called second son in his father's will in 1622. In an Indenture (162/361) on 17/11/Charles 5th year (1631) John Bebye of Broughton (and his wife Rebecca) sold land in Great Addington to his elder brother James of Islip, both referred to as sons of John Bebye, deceased. John died 18 May 1650 while on his way to America. He left five sons and two daughters. He left England in April or May 1650 and was accompanied by his five children. Two sons, John and Samuel, preceded him to America and his daughter Hannah and wife Rebecca probably died before he started. His will (below) was written and signed on shipboard on the day he died, at which time his eldest son was twenty-two and his youngest child eight. He appointed William Lewis and John Cole executors of his will. The immigrants reached their destination in the latter days of May 1650 and it is probable that the ship reached a port in the neighborhood of Cape Ann, MA for it is recorded the Rev. Mr. Blinman administered to the spiritual interests of this Colony and that he, with a party including the Beebes, had moved to New London, CT by March 1651, where they were prominent in the early settlement of that place. Actual dates of birth of his children are unknown. However, a number of documents show their date of baptism as the date of birth.

WILL OF JOHN BEEBY, 18 MAY 1650. John Beeby, Witness, William Partridge, John Partridge.

The above is copied from the Book "The Beebe Family of Broughton, England" by Clarence Beebe, 1915. It is reported to be as nearly as possible verbatim.
Note: Many sources give birth dates of John and Rebecca's children which are really the dates they were baptized in England. Rebecca: She was of Broughton, Northamptonshire, England and was the sister of Samuel and Rev. Nathaniel Ladd of Broughton. In the will of Samuel Ladd, dated 23 Sep 1634 "To sister Rebecca Beebe, 5 pounds. To her son Samuel, 5 pounds. To each of her other children, viz.: to John, Thomas, and Rebecca, 10 shillings, being 1 pound, 10 shillings in all." One unproven record from LDS Library says that Rebecca is the child of Robert and Mary Ladd. Les Sullivan who lives near Cambridge, England says he has seen a record that calls Rebecca's mother "Marvis" but says the writing is very poor. Robert is said to have been b. Hannington, Northamps, England 1 Jan 1577 and was buried in Broughton 12 Mar 1658. Broughton parish register of burials 1632-1676 shows "Old Robert Ladd, a good old man died and was buried in a good old age".Robert's wife was b. 1580.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. John BEEBE was born in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England. He died 18 May 1650 in the sea on the way to the Colonies.

LUCIUS BEEBE OF WAKEFIELD & SYLENDA MORRIS BEEBE, HIS WIFE, by Louise Beebe Wilder, The Bnickerbarker Press, New York, 1930. DAR Library, page 5.

In the year 1650, upon a day in spring, John Beebe, a yoeman, or husbandman of Broughton, set forth with his family upon a journey to the New World. John was past middle life and as subsequent events proved, not in the best of health, and had apparently left an established position in the community of Broughton to embark upon this uncertain enterprise.

That he was a yoeman is substantiated by his won statement in his will made later on ship-board. And a yoeman, according to the Standard Dictionary, was a freeholder, next under the rank of gentleman. "Anciently, a man who had free land of 40 shillings yearly, being thereby qualified to vote, served on juries, etc. Apparently they were men of some education who cultivated their own land and served their king in many capacities. A phrase has crept into the language - yoeman service - meaning concentrated hard work, effectual service.
The name of John of Broughton's wife was Rebecca Ladd, and it is believed that from these two most of the Beebes in America are descended. The children of John and Rebecca (Ladd) Beebe, as registered in the church of St. Andrew, in Broughton.
The little group of persons who sailed that long ago spring day in 1650 numbered six. John Beebe and five of his children, Thomas, Nathaniel, James, Rebecca and Mary. Since in his will made later at sea John mentions neither his wife nor his daughter Hannah, it is presumed that they had died some time before the voyage was undertaken. Two of his sons, John who was twenty-two, and Samuel, who was but seventeen, had apparently preceded their father in this journey to the new land.
But John Beebe did not live to found a new home in the new land. He died at sea, possibly upon the same day as that on which his will was made, May 18, 1650. This will is on file in the Probate Court of Hartford, Conn., in the second volume of the records.
THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN BEEBE

Deceased the 18 day of May 1650.

SOME ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF ALEXANDER BEEBE, compiled by Adah Beebe Seger, from research of the Beebe family, Clarence Beebe Genealogy, to the generation of Alexander and Sarah Bowker Beebe, and from data furnished by Mrs. Florence Whelan, Tecumseh, Michigan; Miss Elizabeth Simpson, Mexico, New York and members of the various families. Found in the Groton Library, Groton, New London Co., Connecticut.

John married Rebecca LADD on 1627 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England. Rebecca died before 1650 in England.

LUCIUS BEEBE OF WAKEFIELD & SYLENDA MORRIS BEEBE, HIS WIFE, by Louise Beebe Wilder, The Bnickerbarker Press, New York, 1930. DAR Library, page 5.

Rebecca was not listed in John's will. She must have died in England.

They had the following children:

+ 2 M i John BEEBE was christened 4 Nov 1626 and died 14 Apr 1708.

3 F ii Rebecca BEEBE was christened 11 Aug 1630 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England.

A MONOGRAPH OF THE DESCENT OF THE FAMILY OF BEEBE, from the earliest known immigrant - John, of Broughton, England, 1650, compiled and edited by Clarence Beebe, 150 Nassau Street, New York, pages 12 & 13.

Rebecca Beebe, daughter of John, was baptized at Broughton, England on August 11, 1630. She was the second child of John and Rebecca Beebe. It is recorded that she married John Rusco, of Norwalk, Conn, at Hartford January 2nd, 1650. This date is probably wrong and should be 1651, or she had come from England before her father, who sailed in May 1650. It is known that in 1672 she had five children.

Rebecca married John RUSCO on 2 Jan 1651 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. John was born in Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.
+ 4 M iii Thomas BEEBE was christened 23 Jun 1633 and died 1690.

A MONOGRAPH OF THE DESCENT OF THE FAMILY OF BEEBE, from the earliest known immigrant - John, of Broughton, England, 1650, compiled and edited by Clarence Beebe, 150 Nassau Street, New York, page 14.

Nathaniel Beebe, son of John, was baptized at Broughton, England, January 23rd, 1635. He came to New England and settled in New London, Conn., with his brothers before 1650. Land was granted to him and he settled in Stonington, Conn., before 1670. He would appear to have done some military service during King Philip's War, for the General Assembly in May, 1776, directed that "Nath. Beebe" and certain others should be allowed "to take to themselves those guns now in their hands in part of wages due to them from the country." He was constable in Stonington in 1678.

There is no evidence that he was ever married. Miss Caukins states that his land was apparently absorbed in the large estate of his neighbors, the Denisons, and that William Denison in his Will, dated 1715, "disposes of the Beebe land" but adds: "I order my executors to take a special care of Mr. Nathaniel Beeby, during his life, and to give him a Christian burial at his death." He died December 17, 1724, age 93, according to his tombstone, but only 89 years from the date of his baptism.
7 F vi Mary BEEBE was christened 18 Mar 1637 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England.

Hannah Beebe, daughter of John who probably remained in England, was baptized at Broughton, June 23, 1640.

+ 9 M viii James BEEBE was christened about 1642 and died 22 Apr 1728.

Source: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~beebe/TBebe/pekn0... - I do not find it possible that John's Father is Thomas. Thomas was born in 1535 making him in his 60's when John was born.

The Beebe Family in Northamptonshire

Submitted by Alan D Henry, of Michigan, USA

http://www.maurice.skynet.co.uk/genuki/big/eng/NTH/beeby.htm

Four generations of the family are shown to correct a mistake made in the early 1900s, in a genealogy published by Clarence Beebe. Clarence had thought that Alexander Beeby was the direct ancestor of the North American Beebes. This has now been proven incorrect, though many are probably not aware of this fact. By including four generations, the error can be demonstrated, by showing that Alexander was the Great Uncle, and not the Grandfather, of John Beeby, who died on the way to America in 1650.

Thomas Beebe b. EST 1535, England, m. Unknown. Thomas (called Thomas Bebe) lived in Great Addington, Northamptonshire, England and is mentioned in records in 1551, 1559 and 1561. On 19 May 1551 he is cited in a list of 11 names in a Manor Court Roll as a Manorial tenant and serving on a Manorial Jury. On 10 May 1559 he witnessed the will of Alexander Bolney of Great Addington. And on 21 Jul 1561 he witnessed the will of Agnes Bate of Great Addington. While no proof has been found that he is the father of Alexander, John and Mary, he certainly appears to be the most likely candidate."

End

I suspect Thomas Beebe could have been John's grandfather. Jaime
