During the War of 1812 John T. Hovis and his son William served under General Mead's Division, 132nd Regiment, Pennsylvania's Militia, commanded by Lt. Colonel Samuel Dale, Company 5, Captain Hugh McManigal, commander. In this same company John T.'s brother, Ernest, was listed as the drummer and John T's son, William, was listed as drummer boy for Uncle Ernest. They served at Erie, PA and all returned home safely.
