John Thompson, son of Anthony, called "Mariner," has usually been assigned a wife Ellen or Hellena (cf. History of Goshen, and Genealogal History of Connecticut, 1911, p. 1000). This is an error, and the only wife of John who appears on record was Anne Vicars, or Vicaris. On 25 Feb. 1657, John Tompson entered an action against the estate of John Roberts, part of which was then in the hands of Mr. Wakeman, on the ground that there had been a treaty of marriage betwixt the said John Roberts and Ann Vicars (now wife to the said John Tompson), and that her former betrothed had by word of mouth left his estate to Ann (Hoadley, Records of the Juristiction of New Haven, vol. 2, p. 198). It should be noted that John Wakeman's wife, Elizabeth Hopkins, had a first cousin Ann, daughter of Walter Vicaris (see the will of William Hopkins of Bewdley, Worchestershire, given in the Wakeman Genealogy, p. 30). John Thompson died 2 June 1707, and the inventory of "Mr. John Thompson, Marriner, late deed," was presented 28 Oct. 1707 (New Haven Probate Records, vol. 3, p. 116). In the absence of any distribution of the estate, it is difficult to place his daughters with certainty. Most of his land had been deeded in the later years of his life to his sons John, Joseph, Samuel, and William (New Haven Deeds, vols. 2 and 3). There is no difficulty in identifying the first three, but there seems to have been considerable misapprehension as to the identity of William…. There is no proof that Ann Vicars was mother of all the children, but no other wife has been found. (Source: Families of Ancient New Haven, by Donald Jacobus 1931)

Samuel settled on the East line of the town of Stanford, a little west of the place known as Federal Store. He or Ezra built the brick house now in the possession of Widow Phebe Thompson, in the year 1785. His son Caleb the house a little to the west (also a brick house) now owned by J. B. Carpenter, in the year 1783. Smith Thompson aforesaid was the son of Ezra. Amos settled near the pond known by the name of Thompson's Pond, as near as can be ascertained, about the year 1746; Gideon in Goshen, Conn. But little is known about his descendants. Rebecca married a man in New Haven by the name of Austin. Her son. Deacon Austin, was a prominent man in that place.
John (Thompson) seems to have been a sea captain. He had three children mentioned on the records of the town, viz: _Mary, born September 9, 1667; Samuel, Born May 12, 1669; Sarah, born January 16, 1671; but probably had two or three previously, whose names they neglected to register. John died June 12, 1707, and an inventory of his estate is on record. His son Samuel (who was great-grandfather to the writer of this) was married November 14, 1695, to Rebecca Bishop, daughter of the Lieutenant Governor. They lived at the Beaver Ponds, now called Westville, about two miles from New Haven. He was captain of the military company in New Haven. He must have been a healthy, athletic man, as his grand son, Hezekiah used to relate that he rode behind him on horseback from New Haven to Goshen, a distance of about 50 miles, when in his 82nd year, at which latter place he died.
This family lived to an advanced age. Some of them settled in Dutchess County, near the line of northeast New York, and others in Goshen, Connecticut. Smith Thompson, Judge of the Supreme Court of the United States, and subsequently Secretary of the Navy, descended from this (Stanford) branch of the family. Enos Thompson Throop, grandson of Enos Thompson, was Charge to Naples, and Governor of the State of New York.
