About John Tomes lll

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tomes-3

John Tomes was the only surviving son of John Tomes and his second wife Ann Warner. His father died when John was only about 3 months old, leaving his mother a widow with a small baby and step-mother to several daughters. [1]

In about 1624 John married Amy. They had at least three children:

  1. John
  2. Thomas
  3. Ann (1637)

John and Amy became involved in some exciting events during the English Civil War. After his defeat at the Battle of Worcester, King Charles II managed to escape and was fleeing cross country from the Roundheads. After staying the night at Bentley Hall a plan was concocted for him to travel with one Jane Lane, who had obtained a permit from the military for her and a servant to travel to Somerset to visit a friend who was having a baby. Charles disguised himself as her attendant and their adventure began.

The party continued through Stratford-upon-Avon, and on to Long Marston where they spent the night of 10 September at the house of John Tomes, another relation of Jane's. Here, in keeping with his outward guise as a servant, the cook of the house put him to work in the kitchen winding up the jack used to roast meat in the fireplace. Charles was very clumsy at this, and the cook angrily asked him, "What countryman are you that you know not how to wind up a jack?" Charles explained his clumsiness by saying that as the son of poor people, he so rarely ate meat that he did not know how to use a roasting jack.

Following his stay in Long Marston, Charles escaped to the south coast and left for France from Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. [2] The Tomes family renamed their property King's Lodge.

John Tomes died in about 1653.

The Amy who married John Tomes is sometimes said to be Amy Blower but no sources have been found to confirm this.
