From John L Hickson's book "A GENEOLOGIC HISTORY OF DORIS VAN METER HICKSON and Her Family" p. C-1:

Note 1: A survey, dated 12/24/1732, is entitled, "Survey for John VanMetre 50 acres of land in Orange County lying on the north side of Opequon Creek and opposite to another tract of land formerly surveyed for the said John VanMetre, it being within the limits of 100,000 acres greanted byorder of Council to Alexander Ross and others."

    In 1730, John Van Metre was granted 10,000 (500,000?) acres in the Shenandoah Valley.  In 1731, he sold part of that acreage t oJost Hite (a distant cousin, et al.  Part of that land included dsome of that had been granted to Thomas Sheppard, including the town of New Mecklenburg, later renamed Shepardstown, W. Va.  

This land was in the valley of the Potow-mack. the VanMetres, the Hites,a nd others in 1730 began to settle in the valley of the Shenandoah. Later it was discovered that their grants were in conflict with grants previously made to Lord Fairfax. Guess who finally wond the hundred yer battle in the courst? The Hites!
2: John VanMeter's will, 10/12/1818 (settled 02/14/1825), provided for 3 sons and 4 daughters; Ezra, John, & Thornton, Elizabeth, Josina, Maria & Nancy Alburtis, as well as 2 slaves, Hannah & Johnson.

<p> </p><p><p>During the period of his residence on the Pennsylvania frontier John VanMetre was very active in the military movements against the Indians. He was appointed ensign of militia of Yohogania Co. (Va.), 28 June, 1779 (Yohogania Court Journal). He commanded a company of Westmoreland Rangers and is variously mentioned in connection with the militia on the western waters between the years 1778-1783. Also a John Van Metre, Jr., was a member of the Stokeley Rangers during the same period (Penna. Arch., 3d Ser.; Draper's Notes; Wither's Chronicles, and Kercheval's History of the Valley, 2d ed., p. 204).</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Will dated 2 Mar 1797, probated at Wellsburg, Brooke Co., VA.</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p></p></p><p>Parents listed as Abraham (Henry’s brother) and Ruth Hedges</p>
