Son of Joseph W. and Elizabeth (Slingerland) VanSchaick. Married to Frances Eliza Shaver. After an elementary course in the district school he attended Charlotteville and Williston (MA) Seminaries, Williams College and Albany Law School. He was a teacher, School Commissioner, a Notary Public, NYS Senator and had a law office in Cobleskill. Affiliations: Secretary of the Schoharie County Anti-Horse Thief Society, president of the Cobleskill Agricultural Society, member of Holland Society, first Sachem of the Improved Order of Red Men (IORM) in Cobleskill and Mason. John was sometimes known as the "Nestor of the Schoharie County Bar". His wife, six children and sister Emily VanSchaick survived him.
