Some sources claim he was a twin to brother James, regardless they were most definitely brothers and the youngest sons of Jacob Voyles. Jacob and his four sons, William, Thomas, James and John immigrated from Wales, ca. 1755. There is a manifest record of a "Jacob Voll" arriving aboard the 'Nancy' in the fall of 1754, however that particular voyage originated at Lorraine [which is in France], and picked up passengers in Rotterdam [present-day Netherlands] before heading to the Colonies. No mention of stops in Wales prior to the Atlantic crossing is made. Further research would undoubtedly confirm the exact arrival of the family.

Researchers do agree the family was in Charleston, South Carolina by 1759, farming tobacco and cotton, a potentially lucrative business in the Colonies at that time.

After the death of their father, the brothers and their growing families began to expand into neighboring area's.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Apr 9 2023, 17:52:52 UTC
