About Jonas Powers, Sr
Jonas Powers (Sr)
Some records (including the headstone of his wife Mary Tryon Powers who died 20 years after his death) show his name as Jonah Powers.
Veteran of the French & Indian War
Records indicate that both Jonas Sr. and Jonas Jr. joined the Army during the Connecticut Campaign of 1760. Jonas Sr. was a member of Col. Nathan Whiting's 2nd Regiment, Capt. Ichabod Scranton's 5th Company. I have seen family trees that have Jonas Sr. dying in battle on 19 July 1755 but I have never seen any records verifying this.
However, I have viewed records from the Connecticut Campaign of 1760 that show Jonas Powers enlisting of 14 May 1760 and being Killed in Action on 28 September 1760 so this would appear to be the correct date. At the time of his death the 2nd Regiment was stationed at the "Fort at Number 4". This was the northernmost British settlement along the Connecticut River in New Hampshire until after the French and indian War.
