Timeline for Jonathan Fugit & Leticia Wells Mary Hilpert originally submitted this to HILPER~1 on 9 Jun 2009

1778 Jan 25, Jonathan Fugit born in Washington County, Virginia. Jonathan gave his birth date as 25 Jan 1758 on his pension request in 1846, but he was incorrect.  Records show that he was much younger. Early records show that he was much too young to have been in the Revolutionary War:

A) Jonathan says he is between age 26 and 44 on the 1810 census – born between 1766 - 1784. B) Jonathan was included as a tithable with his father on the 1798 tax list then he was listed individually on the 1799 tax list.  That means he was then 21 years old in 1799 – born about 1778. C) Jonathan was listed as the second son when his father’s land was sold in 1833.  John is listed first so he was probably the older brother John was born 1765/1766.  The next brother listed on the deed is Jesse and  he was born about 1781

“Russell County, Virginia Personal Property and Land Tax Lists 1787 through 1800, 1802 and 1810” compiled by Anne Roberts Albert and Ethel Evans Albert in 1973:

1790: Jonathan’s father John and older brother John were on the Russell County, Virginia Personal Property tax lists.

   1791: No List

1792: Neither John is on the list. (John, Jonathan's older brother, has moved)

1793: John Sr is listed with 1 tithable (just himself, Jonathan is to young at 15)

1794: John Sr has 2 tithables: (himself and probably Jonathan who is now 16)

1795: John Sr has 2 tithables: (himself and probably Jonathan who is now 17)

1796: John Sr has 2 tithables: (himself and probably Jonathan who is now 18)

1797: John Sr has 2 tithables: (himself and probably Jonathan who is now 19)

1798: John Sr has 2 tithables: (himself and probably Jonathan who is now 20

1799: John Sr has only 1 tithable: himself. Jonathan is now listed separately with 1 tithable (himself) because he is now 21.

Fugate Forum : Posted by Mary Fugate Jonathan applied for a Rev War pension. In that application, he said he was born in Shenandoah Co. VA 25 Jan. 1758. He was in Russell Co. VA for a few years sometime after the War, then moved to what was then Clay Co. KY (later Perry and Breathitt). He apparently moved to KY about 1804 - he was on the Russell Co. tax lists of 1799, 1800, 1801 & 1803 but not later......Jonathan was named as an heir of John Fugit of Castlewood, Russell Co., VA when the heirs sold their shares of his estate. See Russ. Co. deed book 9, p. 380, and book 10, p.52.....John's parents are not known, but from the known dates, it is unlikely that he was the son of Josais (d. 1757) and Mary of King George Co. VA.

Jonathon FUGATE, KY, b.1755? Posted by: Patricia Lindsay Clemons Date: March 19, 1999 at 01:47:12

I have been tracking the family of Jonathon Fugate for years because he was closely associated with my family in Breathitt Co Ky. Francis Clement/Clemons and his son Benjamin came into Breathitt with Jonathon Fugate and family. Wonder if it is same Jonathon as the Jonathon I have was one of the oldest men in Breathitt census stating he was born in N.Carolina in ca. 1855.

Have many stories about this Jonathon. He was a big rough strong man. They were in Hazard KY for a time before they came to Breathitt, and the men in town bet Jonathon he couldn't carry 1000 lbs around the court house (it was a log cabin court house). He took the bet and they wrapped 1000 lbs of chains around him. He went around the court house until his feet bled. But he did it.

This story in 1962 from William Clemons of Breathitt County. He was the son of Benjamin Clemons Jr and was born Jan.25, 1894 died Sept 1974. He gave me a treasury of family stories and history of the Clemons, Fugates and possibly Nobles coming into Breathitt Co. The stories mostly checked out accurately with census and other written records.

Fugate Family Newsletter Volume XX-3, November 1998

Posted to Sharing Noble Gemeology by Pat Urbach~CA - Jan 3, 2007 ........According to Clay, Perry, & Breathitt tax records, Jonathon Fugate first lived in Clay County, and was taxed for 1700 acres, Troublesome.

In 1818, Jonathon sold 1200 acres, Clay County, Troublesome, to William Miller.

In 1820, Jonathon purchased 50 acres, in Clay County, SF Quicksand.   This area later became Perry County, then Breathitt –  but is always referred to as Quicksand on the land tax records.

When Jonathon moved to Quicksand, his new neighbors were the Mc Daniels.   This area where Jonathan and the Mc Daniels lived is the same area where William Noble shows up in 1830 –  and the same area where Ursula Noble shows up in 1840 –  and the same area where John Noble shows up in 1850 (married to Katie Fugate).

I only have Fugate tax records, so I was only able to trace Jonathon Fugate.   If you compare this (1810 Clay Census) to the 1820 Clay Census you will see what I mean about Jonathon moving to South Fork, Quicksand, where the Mc Daniel’s, William Noble, Ursula Noble, and John Noble also lived.......
