Jonathan Hill's birth date is based on Jonathan Jr.'s birth date, assuming he was at least 18 years old. [1]

Jonathan Hill settled on Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay about 1657 or a little before. William Allen came from Wales in 1660 and settled on the Island three years later. The two families were probably intimate friends or neighbors before they left Wales, and one family settled the other. [1]

Jonathan Hill either married before coming to this country or upon his arrival. His wife was named Mary, but nothing further is known of her. THe Hills and Allens lived on Prudence Island and acquired large estates, until the war of the Revolution, when with many others they were stripped of their livestock and everything else of value. Every house, barn and haystack was burned by order of Captain Wallace, a British officer in command of the fleet in Narragansett Bay, Sir Peter Parker being Lord Admiral. The Hills and Allens were obliged to leave their homes on the Island for less costly homes on the mainland.[1]

Jonathan and Mary had three children:

  • Robert, married Mary Pearce
  • Jonathan, born 1657; married Unknown
  • Henry, born 24 June 1661 at Kingstown, RI; married Elizabeth. Had daughter Mary Hill, who married 23 June 1729 William Nichols.[1]

Jonathan died before 1690.

Ray Jenness, a seasonal resident and chair of the Prudence Conservancy, is onboard the 9:45 a.m. ferry from Bristol to Prudence Island, heading out for a few days of respite. It’s peak summer, and Jenness’s commute is akin to that of the native population centuries before. “The island was a pre-Colonial Indian summer grounds,” he explains. “The idea was: It’s summertime; why would you stay in the city? They would camp at Pine Hill [on the island’s west coast]. If you dig down into the dirt, you’ll find piles of shells they left behind. You could tell where they were hanging out.” The Narragansett people, who refer to the island as Chibachuweset, conveyed it to Roger Williams and Governor John Winthrop in 1637, who returned the gift with twenty fathoms of wampum and two coats. The men split the island in half, with Williams taking the north side and Winthrop claiming the south. Their shares are marked by Division Wall, which still stands today, just south of the ferry landing. The theologian and Rhode Island founder named the island Prudence, and its nearby counterpart, Patience — which is sited to the northwest and was part of the deal with the Narragansetts — after desirable virtues. ESoon after the purchase, colonists flocked to Prudence Island for its abundant waters and fertile farmland. But the island was co-opted by British forces during the Revolutionary War.
