In 1712 and 1713, Joost Paldinck, also known as Joseph Paulding was a Deacon and Treasurer in the Dutch Reformed Church, located in the district of Philips Bourgh Manor, in Westchester County, New York. [1]
Joost married Catherine Duyts, daughter of Jan Duyts. In the latter part of 1713, Joost requested that his membership be transferred to the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City, which was granted. He and Catherine lived there for a time and started a family. They returned to Westchester County, as is evidenced by their membership being recorded in the same church, which was later called the First Reformed Church of Tarrytown. The location of the church did not change, however the name of the location was changed to North Tarrytown, and finally incorporated into the village of Sleepy Hollow, which is what it is called today.
In 1926, the History Research Society of the Tappan Zee published a book that recorded inscriptions on gravestones in the Old Dutch Burying Ground dated prior to 1800. Entries also included some pertinent biographical information and details about family relationships. The pages of this book have been scanned available online. [2]
Joseph Paulding and Catherina Duyts children are buried in a family plot (#149) at the Old Dutch Burying Ground at Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York. His wife Catherine is buried there, as well as his children and his grandchildren.
Joost's daughter, Margrietje (English=Margaret) was born September 1703 and married Jan Uyten Bogaert
Joost's daughter, Catherine, married Gysbert Uyten Bogaert, on November 26, 1720 at the Reformed Dutch Church in New York City. She died in December 1765.
From the biographical information associated with this burial, we know that Joost's son, Joseph died February 24, 1786, in his 80th year. The names of his wife and children are also given. [3]
Joost's wife Catherine Duyts died, leaving him with three children under the age of seven. Joost married second, Sophia (Hendrick) Kranckheyt, widow of Theunis Herxc Kranckheyt. Sophia's husband had just died as well and had children from her first marriage.
