Joseph Andrews, of Newington

Joseph, fourth son of John Andrews of Farmington, the original settler, and his wife Mary, was born 26th of May, 1651, at Farmington, Ct.; baptized there 2d of April, 1654; married about 1677, Rebecca {Whaples}. They located about the centre of Newington, but at what date is now unknown; he seems to have a tax list there in 1693, in the town of Wethersfield, (of which Newington was a parish and remains up to this date, 1871.) The first land of his found on record was given him by vote of the town 19th of March, 1683-4, a small piece near his mill, upon which to build a house and barn.

In 1684, March 26th, he bought 16 acres from John and Joseph Riley, the 94th lot on "Cow-plane;" it butts north and south on said Joseph's land, which shows he held land there previous to that date. He had common lands distributed to him on his list of 1693. He purchased 24th Sept., 1702, for £44, of Elizabeth, (probably the widow of Phineas Wilson, of Hartford, late then a merchant there, deceased) two acres of land at a place vulgarly called "Cow-plane," with a dwelling-house and saw-mill thereon, together with a timber-chain and all the appurtenances of said house and saw-mill; the said two acres is bounded east on said Joseph's land, and on common land west, and north and south with the pondage belonging to said mill.

He also bought, in 1701, 25 acres from Abram Williams, in the west division, on Farmington line; 12th August, 1695, he bought 12 acres, the 95th lot in WethersnVld, west division, of Jonathan Deming. He also had 40 acres on the Middletown path in Farmington, by Will of his father. He was evidently a large landholder, and probably rented the mill of Phineas Wilson, the merchant of Hartford, until after his (Wilson's) decease, when he bought it from the widow.

Joseph Andrews died 27th April, 1706 aged 54 years, eleven months, one day. The widow Rebecca exhibited his will at probate court 23rd May 1706, to which she and her eldest son, Joseph, were executors. The inventory was made by Nathaniel Stoddard, and John Curtiss, jun.; amount £413 7s. The estate of the father had scarcely been settled when the mother Rebecca died, and administration was granted to Joseph the son, and the same day, 6th Oct., 1709-10,

Caleb, 15 years old, and Ann, 13, chose their brother Joseph for guardian, he giving bonds. The above Joseph Andrews was near neighbor to John Slead, one of the early settlers of Newington, who bought his 52 acre lot, 1681, of Jonathan Kilcy; it butted west on Farmington line, on which lot ho built a new house and mortgaged, 1687, the whole to Phineas Wilson, merchant of Hartford, to secure indebtedness. This Joseph Andrews, senior, had two nephews settled in the south extremity of Newington, and these three Andrus families, with John Slead above, and a man by the name of Hunn, Barber, in his Historical Collections, makes the first settlers of the place. At the close of the revolutionary war, it is said there were 62 persons of the name of Andrews in Newington, but immediately after its close they died and dispersed, so that not one of the name has resided there for many years.

He died 18th Jan., 1756, at Newington, Conn. where he had served his generation as a] physician. A red sandstone in the cemetery there tells where he] and wife Sarah lie.

This ancient town of Mattatuck was laid out some 18 miles long from north to south, and about ten miles wide from cast to west; the aggregate of the present population now, 1870, June census, is 13,039.

A second farm was established by Joseph Andrus, Sr. Andrus (1651-1706) was a native of Farmington. He was the son of John, and early settler there, and the uncle of later West Farms settlers John and Daniel Andrus, Jr. Joseph, Sr. purchased on March 26, 11684, the other eighteen acres of the upper Ryly sawmill lot.

(II) Joseph , son of John Andrews , was born May 26, 1651 , at Farmington, Connecticut , and baptized April 2, 1654 . He married, about 1677 , Rebecca - . They located about the centre of Newington , but at what date is now unknown. He had a tax list there in 1693 , in Wethersfield , of which Newington was a parish. March 26, 1684 , he bought six acres of John and Joseph Riley , the ninety-fourth lot on "Cow-plane "; it touches north and south on said Joseph 's land. He also owned much land, and probably rented the mill of Phineas Wilson , the merchant of Hartford , until after Wilson 's decease, when he bought it of the widow. He died April 27, 1706 , aged fifty-four years. The widow Rebecca presented his will at probate court, May 23, 1706 , of which she and her eldest son, Joseph , were executors. The estate of the father had hardly been settled when the mother Rebecca died, and administration was granted to Joseph , the son, and the same day Caleb and Ann , chose their brother Joseph for guardian. At the close of the revolutionary war, it is said that there were sixty-two persons of the name of Andrews in Newington , but immediately after its close they died and dispersed, so that not one of the name has resided there for many years.
